My creaky old self is on anti-inflammatories these days, just like Abbie. Talk about side effects-- now I know what she's going through! I don't steal food off the counter and I haven't peed on the floor yet, but I'm waking up crazy early and feeling mighty loopy now and then.

At first dim light this morning, having been up for hours, I shuffle back into the bedroom and see that Ernestine has climbed up and stretched out on my side of the bed.

Now, I'm not a dog-kisser, but Ernie looks even cuter than usual this morning, and I get a sudden urge to rub noses, Eskimo style. I lean down real close and get in position to give her a good, long, loving one.

Next thing I hear is my wife's sleepy voice: "That's not her head end."

Oh.

Thanks, dear. I owe you a big one.

Remember, kids-- drugs are bad, m'kay?
