cost of a professional grooming

Ok, I'm officially in shock. I just made an appointment to have our 8mth old Olivia professionally groomed. I'm having difficulties getting her nails clipped and thought I should get her used to a professional grooming while still a pup. Well, the shock came when she quoted me a price of $80.00-$250.00. Is this a usual and customary fee for a Newf. grooming? My previous dog was a Bouvier that I took every 8 weeks for grooming and she cost $60.00. A bargin I know, but I keep my dogs matt-free and very well groomed in-between. For those of you that aren't familiar with a Bouvier, they are a large dog, mine was 90lbs, and require coat stripping twice a year and have a difficult breed specific cut, similar to a schnauzer. I drove and hour and a half and thought I'd try to find someone reputable closer to my house.
Should I call around or resign myself? Thanks for your help...Allise

I spent $65 at Petco but was totally disappointed. It was Abbey's first grooming and they did a really bad job and she came home "shell shocked". I'll gladly spend more if they do a good job and treat my pups well.

When I take Oliver in for grooming, it's $85 every time. If you've never been to this groomer before and they have no idea the condition of Olivia, I'm sure they're just giving you a worse-case-scenario. Since you keep up with her between groomings, you should be fine.

I charge $80 to $120. I only charge $120 if the dog is extremely matted or has lots of undercoat to remove. Most of the newfs I groom I charge $80

I just groomed my own at home, it was not hard at all. The best part was when my old groomer came into my gallery and saw Montana, she said "wow she still looks so good, she is so shiny"! thinking it was from her grooming job. I just smiled. FREE! She used to charge me $85.00 and I didn't mind paying it but her reaction to montanas drool concerned me. I think she is too prissy to be a newfie groomer. The only thing I don't like to do is their nails and for that I will just pop them into the vet.

$100 per Newf here, so I've decided to try to it myself. With 6 newfs (puppy is easiest) I figure 1 week out of each month is worth the money now with gas so high. Maybe 1 per week, the combing/brushing are the most time consuming. Bathing and drying with a good dryer are the least problematic. In a pinch I can use my local Dog Spa and wash and dry and nails/ear clean/foot pads trimmed is only $50, but they can only do 1 Newfie on any day. So 5 trips is out of the question, but as a back-up it's great.

I start at $85 and go up from there. I've charged as much as $250 for a gigantic, ill mannered, matted to the skin, swims in the lake everyday but doesn't like water, wont stand on the table newf.

It really depends on the condition of the coat, the size of the dog and what you want done. It's also going to depend on if the groomer you use is going to completely hand dry your newf (which is what I do and prefer) or if they are going to use a cage dryer or some combination of the two. If I'm hand drying a dog, I can't be doing anything else, and I charge for my time. A groomer who sticks a dog in cage dryer can be doing other dogs, and *may* charge less because of it.

Either way, it's a lot of work. The amount of undercoat is going to make a huge difference as well. When you think of how much work your groomer is putting in, make sure you consider clean up time/effort as well. When I do a newf that is blowing coat, it'll take me 1 to 2 hours just to clean up from all the hair that has blown all over my shop. Basic prices to me include bath, nails, ears, brushing teeth, hand dry, line brush completely, shave pads, round feet, trim ears and tidy underline. Any more trimming/sculpting then that and I charge more.

I groom Bella myself so it costs me the tools/dryer etc. and then just the cost of all the treats I feed her during the process. I thin $80 is really cheap to groom a newf given how much time, effort it takes.

I've decided that I'm going to take my pup and see what happens. In the meantime I'm going to stock up on the proper tools..I have the dryer and brushes and nail clippers (Ha...must start on the desensitization as this is what prompted the need for an appointment) and contact Jeannie about a grooming tape. I need the proper shears/scissors for ears perhaps a grooming table and then I'll jump in! Thank you all for your input!
