Hello Everyone,

It's been quite some time since I've posted. Life has been throwing some lemons at me consistently and I've been busy trying to make lemonade out of it.

It's been a "HUGE" comfort to be able to come back here and read about all the advice and experiences in taking care of our "bear babies".

Brinks ruptured his right knee cruciate and has had TTA surgery. It is 5 days post op today and so far so good cross my fingers pray to God that it stays that way. Other than the first 24 hours after surgery, he has been walking remarkably well and each day getting better and better. I know today is only day 5 but I'm extremely pleased and relieved with the results so far. Now to just keep doing what we're doing so nothing goes wrong is where my stress comes in. He even lifted his leg to pee this morning bearing all weight on the operated leg...my mouth dropped and my heart stopped when I saw that.

His appetite was good first few days but has gone down a bit the last 2 days...stool was a bit runny and dark....excessive panting (at night only) and a look of extreme worry on his face...thanks to the info here about NSAIDS my red flag went up and I called the Vet. I stopped giving him the Deramaxx as of yesterday so his last dose was Saturday morning. Pain patch comes off today and all that is left is another dose of Tramadol for tonight and tomorrow. Do you think he will need more? I bought Dog Gone Pain but have not used it yet.

All the wonderful ideas on this forum from all of you is helping me get through this. Ramp was built, sling, inflatable collar, rugs covering every possible inch of the floor, two mattresses on the floor...one for him and one for me, couch has a fort built in front and obstacles on it so he doesn't jump on it and believe me when I tell you he stands in front of it and you could see the wheels in motion trying to figure out how he could get on the couch.

When he was neutered in September (2 years old) we were told about his hip dysplasia. The neuter surgery was a fiasco....his sack swelled up the size of a small cantalope with blood. Hip Dysplasia was confirmed with a new set of xrays this time around as well. His left hip is moderate to severe with a bit of arthritis already showing and his right hip is a little loose from the socket. He already was showing discomfort if he went on a longer walk before the knee injury. First things first...is to heal from the knee and then I'll worry about his hips.

So I guess we've joined the Hip Club and the Knee Club?

Thank you again..
You all get a set of angel wings as far as I'm concerned.:hugs:

With Love,

I'm so sorry to hear about Brink's surgery and send him lots of good thoughts, and to you also that he makes a good recovery.

Hi Brinks and Brink's Mom
Thule had double TPLO four weeks ago this coming Wednesday, and she's progressing marvelously. I'm calling the vet today to see if I can't take her on short walks (10-15 mins) since she's chomping to get outside in the spring air. The instructions we got after surgery were that she could possibly go on walks at 4 weeks, if all was going well ... and it is.

Sorry you had to join our Club Brinks, but it's worth it!! Thule doesn't struggle to stand up any more ( she had both knees done ); she still takes her time sitting, but she IS a Newf after all!!!

Good Luck!

Welcome to the club, I have heard rumors that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I hope Brinks feels better soon and his recovery is very uneventful. I doubt if you will need additional pain medicine, Puddles is quite the drama queen and she only required Tramadol for a day after the patch came off. I think our club should have it's first official meeting with pain patches for all who have been sleeping on makeshift beds for the last couple of weeks.

Sorry to hear this news.

Ask your vet about Adequan injections. They'll help the HD and the cruciate repair.

Get well Brinks! and Brinks' Mom, too! It's hard being a mom and watching your furkid in pain. It's a helpless feeling. Prayers for you and prayers for all that have posted.

I am sorry to welcome you to the club. It really will get a little easier everyday. I'm beginning to see, though, that it won't be "easy" for a while. I keep telling myself "it's only for a few months....", but I also miss my bed!

Glad to hear Brinks is recovering well. And I am also so glad you read about the NSAIDs and got him off the Deramaxx. Big hugs and continued good health to you both.

I knew things were too good to be true around here.

All stitches were done from the inside and Brinks had surgical tape over the incision.

Most of the tape had come off except for one small section at the bottom about 2 inches long. Well, as I'm sitting on the floor with him doing my "inspection"....The last bit of tape is ready to come off and there I see "pus" on a small part of the incision at the very bottom. Its just ironic that the part thats been covered is the part to get infected.

So let the dance begin.....antibiotics were started. Good thing had some of the right kind on hand and Vet said to start giving it to him and "watch" that it doesn't get worse.

Well, that's crappy!!

Sorry this has happened, but the antibiotics should take care of it. They gave Thule 8 days of antibiotics when I brought her home.. just in case.

I know some don't like to give them like that, but I'm in the "better safe than sorry" camp.

Kisses for Brinks!
