For those of you with Newfs that have an allergy to chicken. What symptoms do they get? Thanks

Itching, icky ears (yeasty) and paw licking. I don't know if it's a true allergy, per se, but Gabe gets these symptoms when eating a chicken based food or a food with any chicken in it. We switched to fish and symptoms went away completely.

Same as above. Switched to Orijen 6fish and nary an itch since... unless they happen to get a treat (NOT from us!) or something that is chicken based.

My son's dog is allergic to chicken based foods and treats. Interestingly, not to home cooked chicken.

Coco's symptoms were skin related. Itching, scratching...endlessly. She had no ear or digestive issues.

Small amounts like a treat don't seem to bother Snuffles most of the time, but he tends to get very loose in the rear end department.

I always say one of the main reasons his old owner gave him to me, was they had changed him to a chicken based food about the time they decided to get rid of Snuffles, and he left a BIG pile in the living room when the wife was out of town on business. Poor Mikey had to clean it up, and he got grossed out cleaning the yard.

Same here, except Tug's ears still get itchy, but it's mostly due to swimming and fighting like a Tiger not to have his ears cleaned :smashy:

I've seen quite a few dogs that reacted to chicken based foods but were fine with actual chicken. I wonder if it's something used in the processing.

I wonder about all these allergies too. As to wether it is from the preservatives. Like Annabelle's wheat allergy, but she can eat home baked bread with no issue's. But any wheat in anything bought and she goes red.............Hmmmmmm

Sophie's chicken issues are mostly with her ears. They will go from fine to almost swelled shut in just a couple of days...Red, inflamed and gunky. She will also get loose behind.
Haven't really noticed any skin/licking issues though.

When we switched Tsunami to Orijen chicken based, we saw scratching and paw licking and very loose stool we were just starting to see dry skin as well.... since we have switched him back all those have cleared right up. I don't think home cooked chicken affects him the same though.

The thing with the allergies is that so many are not reactive to the product when it's not IN dog food. We farm...and I can guarantee you that the wheat that is in the flour you buy is a very different grade of wheat than the crap they are putting in the dog food. The same goes for chicken etc. I sincerely believe that the allergies are often to something they are "doing" to that product before it reaches the dogs...so many dogs can eat chicken but not chicken based dog food. I wonder about the chemicals used in the process or, as Ronnie stated, the preservatives.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm starting to think Bax may have an allergy to chicken. Trying to sort it out now.

I sometimes boil white meat chicken and rice as a topper for my gang. A special treat for their kibble if you will. No issues with it if I add it but let me open a can of wet food that is chicken based to use as a topper and WOWZA! The hot spots appear on the bellies and the itches begin.
I stopped using them.
Weird...

I'm not sure if you mean in kibble or raw, but mine would throw up raw chicken shortly after eating it. I didn't see a big difference when she had kibble, however, she was very prone to staph infections which I suspect was in part due to a chicken allergy in kibble.

Giving Gandolph chicken is like an atomic bomb exploding in a pancake batter factory.........
