I haven't posted here in a long while, but some of you oldies may remember me and my Landseer, Carmen.
My sweet Carmen lost her 11 month battle with osteosarcoma on Monday.
We'd had a wonderful holiday weekend at the lake, full of sun and swimming. Carmen loved the water more than anything else in the world. She spent much of the weekend with a bumper either in her mouth or resting under her paw at the beach. I haven't seen her seem so healthy, happy, and energetic in a long time.
She passed away peacefully in her sleep during the car ride home, in the company of her family.
True to her operatic namesake, Carmen was a fiercely independent girl. She was smart and agile - a good girl with a naughty streak. She earned her "Ch" in eating at our NN get-togethers (hot dogs, peanut butter...). She and I took joy together visiting residents at our local nursing home as a Delta Society Pet Partner team. She had an indomitable spirit; the loss of her leg never slowed her down. She lived life with vigor right up to the last hours.
Becky, if you don't mind, I'd like to use the epitaph that you gave her: Carmen, I know there will be no still waters with you by the bridge since you will be forever swimming in 'em.
I love you and miss you dearly, sweetheart.
