blowing dry coat yields white powder

Does anybody else have this occuring with their Newf right now? I used the k-9 III blower on his dry coat and got this white powder in my eyes, his eyes, the filters, and just all over. I was shocked because while I may have seen a small amount in the past, I've certainly never been covered in it before. He was brushed, showered and blown every weekend in Oct., but then I got very busy and only combed his coat twice in three weeks. This is then what got all over us by the third week:

That happens when I use the dryer on Bojie periodically to get debris off etc, in between baths. Dander I am assuming, it's when I'm grateful for such a powerful dryer!

Yes, Dander! Glad you got it all out. I just wonder sometimes how ppl can live without a K9 III!

We have a non-k9III dryer (which I was quite pleased with) and we'd get some of that dander dust. Then we moved and somehow my dryer got lost. So I ordered a K9III and we get lots of dander now. I wonder if I blew my humans off every day, maybe we'd have less dust in the house???

This is 'scurf' or shedding skin cells and is quite normal. Dogs (and people, too!) shed epidermal skin cells constantly. If you have the stomach to face it, google house dust to see how much of what you dust up is actual skin cells. Shedding cells does seem to increase when shedding coat, so you are likely to see a significant increase in white, powdery material during coat blowing.

Hint: wear eye protection when blasting, especially if you wear contacts or a mask if you have respiratory sensitivities. This stuff gets vaporized into the immediate atmosphere. Best to blow it off outdoors.

This is the blower and filter which was cleaned but used for one more dry coat blowing. You can see the dust sticking to it. So, more is coming out. It's just not as bad as the first. My highly allergic sister was in the house yesterday for a half hour. She washed her hands twice and made sure she didn't touch Chumley. She was fine until he started wagging his tail in front of her face. Her eyes began to look bad. We just left then to go out to lunch and she was fine then. When I returned I did him again to find more coming out, but not as bad as the first blowing that shocked me. No...I haven't showered him yet. That's a bit more work (bad owner, I know.) I did get the Mars Coat King out which makes me feel like I'm winning the battle. Word of advice to new Newf owners: Don't ignore your dog's coat for 3 weeks. Someone wanted to know the k-9 III price...I believe it was around $420? I'm not totally sure, but Sound Bay Newfs (Lynn) is a dealer so she would be able to help there.

I sell it for $373.95 + shipping. Glad you are putting your dryer to good use, Stacy!

I found another use for it compliments of Donna K. When I'm done with the dogs, I pull it next to my car, open all four doors, and blow all the dog hair out. It really works!

I was shocked when my husband came inside from dry blowing two of our newfs today - his whole head and hands looked like the picture of your hands! He used our k9III we bought from Lynn. I always make him do this outside.

Really, really glad he took a shower tonight:)

Boy am I glad to see this! I got covered in that white stuff too the last time we blew out Elvis. I thought since we did it in the garage maybe it was just dust from the floor, but nope - it's all Elvis. We blow him out about once a week or so.

I call it "newf dust". :) I just blew Snuffles out this afternoon.

I had my dryer in the house one winter day to blow something not long after getting it. Snuffles was laying there in the living room I ran the blower on Snuffles as a game for he who use to likes to bite at the air flow. Not realizing how much dander gets caught deep in the fur I blew in the coat. The living room needed a MAJOR dusting after I got done.
