Best Vacuum

Also, I have heard that some people will use seam rippers to clean the beater bar. I'm sure scissors work just as well, but I thought I would throw that suggestion out there.

Cindy is right...you don't need the attachment. But, the DC17 comes with it, and that particular model is considered the "workhorse" of the line. It has a different motor system. You get the attachments with it. LOL

Also, with just Koda, you won't have to clean the beater bar every time you use it. I clean out my beater bar once a week (and I vacuum 1-2 times a day) and only takes 30 seconds or so. (I cheat by using scissors to cut the wound up dog hair and pull it out in one swift motion. Very easy when you cheat!) I also tend to obsessively groom Mila though, so if you don't brush Koda once daily like I do Mila, you may have to clean out your beater bar more often.
No, you shouldn't have to clean the beater bar every time with one Newf. I have 3 Newfs here always, sometimes more than 3, and an occasional dog guest. :) I also use scissors, takes me less than a minute to clean the beater bar.

OK, feel free to ignore my opinion as we are on our first newf and she only has puppy fur. We have a meile canister for the bare floors and a riccar upright for the few (2) rugs we have. I love them both, and have had them both for at least 12 years.

shop vac....seriously. you can get the mini ones for around 40 CND. For my hardwood and tile nothing beats my shop vac for suction.
I don't know if all shop vacs work the same, but I'd recommend NOT using them to vacuum up the styrofoam packaging popcorn someone's children spread all over the living room floor. You might find that the popcorn is so light it blows around inside the shop vac ... then it gets sucked up into the motor ... then it gets spewed out in tiny pieces behind you without you noticing ... then you really have a mess.

lol...mine has a cloth cover over the intake, so there isn't dust or 'stuff' that gets into the motor :) Mine is only about a year old, so maybe that is a new feature.

Dyson DC17 Animal. It's awesome on everything, even high things.

For ONLY carpets without having to worry about attachments (which it has far too many which are difficult to attach), I LOVE my Kirby. It's by far the best I've ever used. But it's heavy (it's made of steel), cumbersome, has bags and is just a PITA.

I do use it for really deep cleaning/vacuuming the carpet in the LR, but nothing else. I use the Dyson for everything.
I do exactly the same thing! The Kirby is amazing but it is so heavy:(
I now want the hand held Dyson. Anyone have one of those?

I've heard less than stellar reviews of them from friends of mine. Personally, I would recommend a Hoover Commercial Portapower. I posted about it earlier in this thread...

Heaven forbid, but I use box cutters for starting the cleaning process on the Dyson beater bar. Just don't dig through the roller.

Dyson animal for the floors, a Shark vacuum for the stairs; when I get around to it, I am going to install a Nutone central vac system, nothing beats the power of a central vac system!

Another vote here for the Dyson Animal. I bought mine with my tax refund in 2004. I never use the attachments, have 3 dogs, tile and carpets. I clean the beater bar once a week and thoroughly take everything apart and wash the insides (canister, etc) every few months. I have had an Electrolux and a Kirby and I love the maneuverability with my Dyson. I don't find the hoses cumbersome and I love the telescoping wand. I have to admit the "animal" got me cause of it's name but more so because it is purple. :)

PS, I also rent the Thermax carpet steamer from my dry cleaner a few times a year.

I'm currently shopping for a new vac since I've had it with our Dyson Animal. It's only 2 years old and is in the shop for the third time in two months. Granted, it's still under warranty, but I don't have time to bring it in for repairs that often.

I'm leaning towards a Miele. I don't mind paying over $600 for a vacuum if it works well and I know the brand is known for quality while Dyson is very hit or miss.

I have an old Dyson DC07 which is far better than my Dyson DC14. I have one hoover for upstairs and one for downstairs. I also have an old Kirby as backup.

I haven't been so impressed with some of the newer Dysons quality wise and why you cant get an am or pm appointment or be able to take them to a repair shop in the uk is beyond me. I can't commit a whole day for someone to come and assess a repair and then have to rebook an appointment for the parts to come and be fitted which is such a shame as I loved the original Dysons for their good quality.
