You know, I never really understood why so many dogs wind up in shelters until I joined a pregnancy forum and started reading some of the "dog" related posts.

:beatdeadhorse:

These people are unbelievably ignorant, thoughtless, and selfish. I WANT to write, "you know, if you aren't even capable of potty training a puppy, what the hell are you doing having kids?!" Instead I'm trying to offer sensible advice, and meanwhile other people are writing to the original poster and saying things like, "just get rid of it. Take it in the car, drive it a long way off and dump it. Tell your husband, (who loves the dog), that it ran away."

OM FREAKING you know what. I realize at the moment I'm a hideous bundle of overly volatile emotions, but I am genuinely contemplating hurting some people. :banghead:

I understand and I feel your anger. I saw it some on the pg forums I was on, but you should have seen the posts on my adoption forum. If I could have gone thru the computer to well-you-know-what I would have....I thought maybe I was being overly sensitive since I started a rescue group and all that, but after letting some outsiders read it they convinced me I wasn't. I spent a good part of our adoption process dealing with adoptive families and their pets. UGHHHHHHH! Good for you in keeping your cool - I admit to losing it a few times, but overall I really tried to help and that is all you can do. :(

They really, really shouldn't breed. Folks in the "dump it, it's just a dog" camp keep saying, "it's not a human, just get rid of it." I lost it enough to snap back, "The previous posters are correct. A dog is NOT a human. Dogs are usually much kinder." Then went on to make a point about having a pet being a wonderful learning experience for children, teaching nurturing, unconditional love and responsibility.

Pretty sure I need to avoid the preggo boards from here on out. It was bad enough that most of the posters have no idea how to spell...but dog-hating? I'm out.

Being in the automotive business, I'm withya sista. You get shop owners, suppliers, redneck (I'm one too, but I'ma good guy ...) folks that say similar things. Most of the time it involves a bullet. I've re-homed dogs that were getting ready to be "let go on a back road" because the dumb-@ ss was too lazy to listen to some common sense. About a year ago I refused to work on a guys car because I knew he abused the crap out of his lab. It was a good paying gig, but I told him I would rather run my truck through his front window than work on his car. (Again, redneck flashbacks ....) :devil3:

Yup, yet another reason I left the babycenter.com community, and quickly. There were oh so many reasons to leave, but that was definitely in my top 5...

You know.... forums have good apples and bad apples. I appreciate the bad apples because it make me look like a genius. If we didn't have some bad apples in forums I don't know that I could handle the pressure. Ummm.... dump the board and find a better one. You will never to reason with apples like that.

My neighbor got rid of her pug when her kids were 4 and 2. It was too much trouble to have a dog with kids.

He never got walked or taken anywhere. Apparently, opening a door a few times a day was too hard. She actually had the nerve to ask me when I was going to "dump" my dog. Now, I will admit it was hard when Ashton was an infant-but I had absolutely no help. I did everything with her, and all the housework.

But I could open a damn door a few times a day, and walk around the back yard and throw a ball. Once I got our schedule all worked out, we walked again.

Needless to say, the neighbor and I don't talk any longer. (A few other reasons as well as the dog issue )

The only place you'll find the type of compassion, sense of responsibility and love we have for animals is on a animal-specific forum. That's why we're here.

Granted there are plenty of people on other forums that are animal lovers as well, but there are the opposite too. They'd be chased out of here in an instant, but since those forums aren't about the love of animals, well...you get all kinds.

I've run across a similar mentality on another forum I'm on...but there are also a LOT of people who truly love their animals.

The problem I've run across is that they love them but are clueless about taking proper care of or responsibility for them. They just don't know what being a responsible pet owner means.

One lady has a bitch getting ready to have puppies, because she was in season and she didn't know it...and the neighbor's something or other got her girl.

And, to top it all off...the people who are posting are oohing and aahing about "Puppies! Oh boy! Puppies! I love puppies!"

Obviously, neither are altered. Sigh. The whole thing drives me nuts. I had to sit on my hands not to respond to that one.

I just hate the self righteous freaks who feel it is ok to give up their dog simply for the reason they are having a child.. I don't get it. Did I miss the research that says dogs eat babies??? I am almost certain that there are families who have successfully raised human babies and somehow beyond all odds managed to keep their dog. :banghead:

It always makes me sad when people start having children and the poor dog ends up looking for a new home :( I work with someone who re-homed their previously much loved pet once the baby came along....she didn't want dog hairs on the baby :(
Yes I would steer clear from those forums Nessa ;) good on you for trying x

Our newest dog (Rory - crazy Lab) came from a situation like this, and it was my DIL who said if she had to deal with this dog any longer she would go crazy. The dog is 9 YEARS OLD. They did it for all that time, but pregnancy number four put her over the line, and the poor dog is so messed up she is unadoptable, so Mamaw stepped in and said we'll take her! So I deal with her, and she really is much better at our house. Nessa, perhaps this is the time to really vent on this bunch of nimnulls as you have the perfect excuse. Somebody should get in their faces.

What gets me is the people who just dump dogs. I mean really how hard is it to drive to a shelter and say here - I don't want it anymore? At least they wouldn't be outside starving!

Nessa- I think I'm with Nina, since you plan on leaving anyway give them what for in multiple doses and tell them you can't stand the thought of the kind of irresponsible, mean, nasty etc . child they will raise just like themselves so you are leaving. At least get your licks in, it may not do any good, but it can hardly make things worse and maybe at least one will wake up.
