She's settled in as long as her new daddy is around. I still have to give her some time to adjust to being a house dog.
I can't imagine her not wanting that!! Please send pictures - esp of her looking up at you.... I can just picture them already!

PS -- I think the ease of AI has lead to some problems in "stud dog craze". I think we would have better breedings if the owners of stud dogs had more invested than fedexing a few straws and cashing a check.
Not sure I understand your comment. As an owner of a stud dog, we take every inquiry very seriously. And no, not every request results In "fed-exing and cashing a check" as you mention. although we may not carry the burden of whelping the litter and placing the puppies, in the end, the puppies carry BOTH names of parents - and making sure they come into this world from a reputable breeder in the most healthful and loving way is paramount. Owners of stud dogs also have a lot invested ...

Thank you Jennifer! That needed to be said!

Goodness... I certainly didn't mean all stud dog owners are irresponsible and greedy, tho some are.

Genetic diversity is important. Certain dogs get overused and if a dog actually had to "do the deed", owners would have to be more choosy about who they would breed with because of all the work and logistics involved. AI simply makes it easy for the dog-du-jour to be used all over the world in a pretty short amount of time. These decisions have long-term implications for the breed and dogs in general. It's not about any individual breeding; it's about a pattern of breeding that seems to be increasing in frequency.

Uh, you make it sound much simpler than it is. After having unsuccessfully dealt with shipping semen on a couple of different occasions, I know its not as easy as it sounds. Speaking in generalities, I really do not believe its increased a particular dog being 'overused' anymore than he would have been used otherwise. People breeding to the flavor of the month, will get what they want reguardless of how its packaged. IMO, I see people being more 'choosy' now that they have more available, instead of just using the local dog because its easy and he's there.

IMO, what shipping semen has done is its broadened out certain blood lines that would not have had it available in certain geographical areas. In many ways it has helped some breeders enhance their lines or breed out certain faults, which may not have happened without shipping semen. The days of transporting/shipping adult dogs are long gone, along with the dangers.

I understand the point of a few select dogs being over used. However, that is truly a very different issue than whether a breeder uses AI or practices a more natural approach. In fact, if you looked at backyard breeders and most puppy mills, I would bet that almost all of them use a natural approach and never do AI. AI is not an inexpensive way to breed so a lot of thought, time and study often goes into these decisions by breeders.
Don't blame the stud dog owners nor the pactice chosen for breeding. I believe Susan is right - through this technology we've been able to introduce new lines into breeding programs regardless of geography.
In the end, it's still up to breeders (and all parties involved) to make responsible breeding choices. The method or means chosen is truly secondary - in other words... To use a golfing analogy - it's not the club, but the golfer that matters in the game :)
