Antibiotics and immune systems??

I just went through my vet records and my 6 month old Hank has been on varying antibiotics for 52 of the last 100 days. My vet will put him on them and even if his fecal checks out negative will put him on more for whatever reason. She put him on an antibiotic for a bacteria that she was sure would show up in his GI panel before we even got the results back. Reason for all this info is, I was wondering since the demodex is getting the best of him and it happens because the immune system isn't strong enough to deal with it, could the crazy amount of antibiotics have something to do with suppressing his immune system and letting the antibiotics get the best of him? By the way I am looking for a new vet.

Admittedly, don't know much about this... but, I'd try a holistic vet, if you can find one. Traditional methods don't seem to be doing much for you.

Wow, it sounds like Baby Hank has been through A LOT! I would also be looking for a different Vet if I did not have faith that my current Vet. Especially if she was not listening to me. I don't know what part of Louisville your in, but I have heard nothing be good about a Vet by the name of Dr Alex Shelley at Elk Creek Animal Hospital. He is extremely knowledgeable from what I hear.

I'm not in the Louisville area but I try to keep track of different Vets in different areas as we need them for rescues. He would be one I would use if needed, based on the recommendation I was told. I hope your boy gets better, and I would definitely be looking at building his immunity instead of suppressing it.

Speaking with your breeder should also help, as a good breeder will have a network of other breeders and possibly Vets who they can tap into for opinions and possible options. Asking questions here is also a great way to get a variety of ideas to explore with a good Vets help.

My breeder has been very helpful with everything. It kills me that out of all the times my vet has given me antibiotics, only once did she find anything before she gave us an antibiotic(it was for hookworm).

If Hank's tummy can handle it, I would give him some yogurt to help him deal with all the antibiotics. Just make sure it doesn't have any artificial sweeteners in it. Mine love it.

our newf has been on an amazing array of antibiotics and if there is no good reason for them get him off them as it messes up their systems plus you may have trouble in later years with resistance to the drugs.
Was it for any particular problem that he is on them now as if diarahea then antibiotics can cause this

My morgan has had a host of urinary tract infections, due to having two hard birthings, we cannot find anything in urinalysis or other examination protocal that is causing this other then just plain hard birthing.
She has been on antibiotics several times and has lived and her immune system is fine, other then the occasional UTI she is healthy and 11 years old, going strong.
Just becouse they were on antibiotics once or twice or several times, as long as they are given a good diet, good excersise and they are strong healthwise, they fare well.
I tend to go with tums or rolaids or something to that effect if the tummy is upset from them.

Short term use of antibiotics for bacterial conditions is appropriate when a known or suspected organism is causing a disorder. Good medicine dictates that the antibiotic be specific for the organism(s). If there is no improvement in symptoms in the first 48 hours, a culture of the infection should be taken to isolate the organism and adjust the antibiotic to one that is specific for that strain of bacteria. Rarely, a disorder will be identified that necessitates the use of long term-antibiotic therapy. Your vet should be able to tell why this decision is necessary and educate you about the disorder.

Antibiotics are actually designed to help the immune system do its job, and it may do that in the short term, but in the long term antibiotics actually suppress the immune system. Chronic use of antibiotics may wind up harming the immune system. The immune system is actually a collection of defensive mechanisms against disease, and includes certain tissues, organs, cells, and enzymes. These elements work together to create a disease fighting system more powerful than anything medicine has yet to devise. Even the biggest breakthrough in fighting viruses in medical history, the vaccine, is simply a way to help the natural immune system do its job better.

The immune system functions just like an organ or a muscle. When it is not put to use, it atrophies. So when an introduced agent does one its jobs, the immune system performs that job poorly once the agent leaves the body.
Antibiotics also do not make the distinction between harmful bacteria and helpful bacteria and cells. They "throw the baby out with the bathwater" so to speak. Certain strains of bacteria in the digestive tract are essential to digest food and produce healthy vitamins. When these bacteria are killed off, it may lead to vitamin loss, diarrhea, parasitic infection, and the development of allergies.

Thank you Ivoryudx!!! Went to see Dr. Shelley and now have a new vet. Gave a dosage for the demodex, and said he has a bacteria infection on his skin and not a food allergy and our little Hank will be a ok!!! So happy the little guy is going to get the relief he needs.
