A little Steely brag...

I just wanted to brag a little on my girl. We took her out to the lake yesterday. Our friends have a lakehouse and invited us to come out. She's hot spot free. Her spay incision is healed. The weather was not crazy hot. Perfect day to take her. Plus she would get to see her very good friend Caroline. Caroline is 4 years old. She is one of my little flower girls and I have been friends with her Dad since we were little. We grew up next door to each other. I have posted pictures of her and Steely before. She loves Steely. And LOVES to reprimand her. She says, "No, no Stilley!". So cute.
Anyway, I need to preface this by telling ya'll that this was actually Steely's first time to swim. I mean really swim. She's been in my parent's pool before and swam back to the steps to get out. And she's been in the lake before, but only up to her chest. This time, we let her go. And go she did. She was great. She just went right out there like she was supposed to and swam like a Newfie girl should. She loved it. Hardly ever got out.
Now here's the brag.
Caroline, for obvious reasons, thinks Steely is huge. So as Steely was swimming around in the deep (for her) water, Caroline grabbed ahold of her neck and collar and Steely immediately towed her to shore. And then once they were shallow she sat down in the water. As Caroline rolled and jumped all over her. And she just sat there letting her.
Aaron and I just kind of looked at each other like, "did that just happen?". And they did it a few more times.
So, at one point, Caroline was in the shallow water with Steely. So I told Caroline to grab ahold of Steely and I called her out. Steely swam with Caroline on her back out past the dock (where we were) and then turned her around (on my command) and took her back to shallow water. Ya'll should have seen Steely's face. I think she was a little nervous. Her eyes were huge for some reason. I think since Caroline was right on top of her, she was struggling a little. But she did so great. Caroline wanted to go again, but when she put her arms around Steely, Steely whined. Caroline said, "I hurt her." and I said, "no sweetie, she just needs a rest.".
We got her to come out into the water that was up to our waists where Steely would normally have had to tread water. But we got her to stand up and put her front paws on my shoulder. She loved that. She got plenty of rubbins and Caroline wanted lots of big Steely kisses.
And then we bathed her. Caroline said, "I want to help. At home I help my Mommy and Daddy. That's what I do.". So she poured the shampoo on and helped me lather it up.
Anyway, I was just so proud. Steely is just a pet. We don't do water work, drafting, agility or anything. And I know a lot of you do. And I know you all know this, but it is just really something to see your dog's natural instincts take over and watch her do what she was born to do. It really warmed my heart.:hugs: She had so much fun. Hopefully she'll get to be a lake girl a little more before summer's over!

Awesome job, Steely. It's so much fun to see the light go on when they go from cautious, but nervous swimming to full on "this is what I'm here for."

This is amazing. It almost shocks you when you see this and they've had no training at all! What an amazing breed. What an amazing Steely girl.

Thanks everyone!
I forgot to mention the part where Caroline kept diving under water and it would take her about 5 seconds to resurface. Steely would see this from where she was sitting in the shallow end (lifeguard) and start swimming. I would have to stop her because, yes, Caroline did get a paw in the back on several occasions. But she's a very forgiving little girl even though I know how much it hurt. Caroline asked me why she kept swimming to her and I told her, "she must think you're drowing." So then, Caroline would climb up the dock ladder a few steps and as she would jump into the water she'd yell, "Steely to the rescue!". So cute.
But I also heard her refer to my dog as a horsey.

The chance to see the initial type of water safety actions for Steely..must have been heartwarming, and exciting. Given her age, and interior healing..I wonder if there are those with the water training experience ..that would offer important levels, ..and steps/stages..to how the water instructors can lead those ..instincts..toward an excellence..and safety..for all. It must have been an inspiring sight that time upon the lake, ina n HB n Kesa

You say "she's just a pet", but it sounds like she would really enjoy doing some water training. Maybe you should contact the Newf Club in your area, to see when/where they have their next training session? Most newf people are happy to mentor the newbies to the sessions.

Also, Judi Adler has a wonderful training book "Water Work, Water Play" that you can order through her website, http://www.sweetbay.com/

I couldn't agree more, Laurel and will definitely look more into it. I always thought water work would be fun, but now that I've seen her exude that particular Newfie trait naturally, I think she would probably love it.
I have Judi's puppy book, so I'll shoot her an email about buying the water work one.
