Hi everyone,
I don't know if this is anything to be worried about but I don't like it and don't know what to do about it. There is a 3 month old black male Newf in the window pen (not enough room at all!!!!!) at the Emerald Square Mall's pet store in North Attleboro, MA. I went to see him tonight and he is adorable and seems to be okay - very active. The owner (I believe) and I talked and she told me that he was from a very good breeder but not local as she gets these dogs from a company whom she claims is very strict about their clients. I didn't believe that any good breeder would allow this but didn't say that outright to her as I am not 100% sure and didn't want to cause any commotion. I was ready to take him with me but she wasn't sure how much he was selling for???? and thought that it may be around $1,300 - $1,360. It was after 9pm and the mall had already closed so we had to leave but it took everything I had to just leave as they put him in the glass display case facing the mall which is maybe 3'x5' if that. I couldn't buy him - I just don't have the money right now and it killed me to leave. Has anyone ever run into this? What can I do to get him out - is there anything that can be done for her to release him for less? I could try to talk to her about lowering the price but even then .. I don't know. As I write this, I wish I had been able to get him. Thinking about him sleeping in that enclosure and spending a good part of the day in there haunts me. Any suggestions, please????

I don't have an answer but it breaks my heart to hear of this since it is right in my area. It takes every ounce of self-control I have not to rush down and 'save' him, especially since I just placed my foster in a home a few weeks ago. Maybe we can get some input from the rescue folks. Anyone?

It's a tough dilema, if you were to buy him, you encourage the store owner. If someone who is not a newf owner makes an impulse buy, then you have a future "Rescue Newfis." Tough choice. If the Pupper sits in there long enough, he doesn't get the social skills he needs, and then there is socialization and training problems. I have no easy answers for you.

Been there about a million times. There is also the possibility that if you buy him you are supporting puppymills dogs. No easy answer as with me it usually haunts me for a very long time. This is why I stay out of petstores no matter what. I know if I had the financial means I would be taking all of them but as someone has already pointed out there would be more the next day to fill those cages.

Try to get someone you know to buy him. Maybe someone who's looking and knows Newfs. That's probably your only option as you can't really do anything about a petstore selling puppies.

In some states there are laws as to the size of the "cage" for the puppy, etc. Maybe you can check and see if such laws exist in your state and if this store is violating them. Places like that should be shut down. As everyone else has said, they most likely promote puppy mills as no real breeder would sell their puppy to be sold by someone else. And, if you purchase him, that "breeder" will most likely be asked for more as he was sold. Saving them all by getting that place if not shut down, at least unable to sell puppies would be ideal - just my opinion.

you could collect a bunch of literature on care and what to expect with a newf. include internet links and maybe the link to NN. maybe ask the person to include it with the dog when it is purchased. as hard as it is if we start purchasing all the pet store dogs we do create a false need for them. poor baby though!!!

That is terrific advice! It gets the New(f) owner "under the wing" without creating a demand for BYB's/puppy mills. It also gives the store owner the message that people who love this breed will accept and nurture the individual dog while discouraging the practice of irresponsible breeding.

As hard as it is let him stay. If the store cannot sell that breed they won't get another. They only carry what they can sell. Go see him, play with him be available when/if they decide they cannot sell him and tell them about rescue

They usually will lower the price by quite a lot right before they give up on selling him, so please keep your eyes open for that to happen. This is heartbreaking...

I agree, this is an excellent idea. Hopefully if the dog is bought, the new owners will have a good source of info on the breed.
I also think Jeannie's idea about eventually suggesting rescue is great. They might not be too happy if you suggest it right away, but if you can get friendly with the owner of the store, when the time comes, all of those friendly visits might pay off with this little guy getting rescued.

Gather as much literature as you can about Newfs along with an application to the local Newf club in that region and ask the store if they will give this to the buyer of the pup.

To buy the pup is supporting the puppy mills. I don't know that I would believe that the pup is from a good breeder. A reputable breeder wouldn't put a pup in a pet store.

It's a sad type of situation... but, to buy the pup will only encourage the store owner to purchase more pups and thus will support the puppy mills. The pet store may be willing to give the new owner the literature though and, really, that is the only thing you can do. If you buy the pup, you might go back next week and see another pup up for sale. You can't buy them all. Best thing to do is to 'not' buy the pup but try to give the person who does buy it all the information and tools they need to make it a successful forever home and hope for the best.

Sorry I posted to soon, they should have booklets from the NCA about Newfs, that can be given to the pet shop. That really is your only hope educating the people who buy this puppy.

Thanks Annie, you're the BEST. I've been sick over this since this is a chain of 12 stores in New England, I'm wondering if he has littermates in other stores.

I hate how they dupe people into thinking they are on the up-n-up by mentioning they get their puppies from reputable breeders by comments like "USDA Licensed Breeders And Brokers" and "Regulated By The State Department Of Agriculture."

Especially since one of those transport trucks was just siezed nearby in Oxford parked overnight and found to contain filthy conditions and sick puppies with no/disgusting water. I believe more than 20 puppies were removed and brought to Tuft's and the driver is being prosecuted by the MSPCA for criminal neglect.

OMG......I hate this so much. this is why we are struggling to get laws passed to stop pet-shops selling puppies of any breed :grrr: :grrr: I find this so frustrating and as the same time so very sad. poor little puppy, lets pray for a good home for this little one

I love the idea of giving the pet store information about Newfies and what is out there to help them with this pup. I am going to bring the brochures/pamphlets that I have found or put together to the pet store sometime this weekend. Hopefully they will give this information to whomever buys him.

Two minds with a single thought! Excellent idea, if I do say so. :)
Maybe as individuals or groups, we could put together a little packet of educational material and the local Newf Club information to go home with a new puppy when we see this situation...sort of like the gift packets they used to send home with new babies from the hospital.

Fantastic idea. Watch him, and see what happens. Then, RESCUE!
