Without Further Ado ... Kaylee's New Sister ... (NN)

Haven't been around much this week, but for very good reasons :)

Kaylee is always depressed it seems like. She thinks she should be allowed to go play with the other puppies and walk around the outdoor mall for hours everyday. Whenever we see people, dogs, or even squirrels, Kaylee goes BANANAS !!!! She adores anything and everything that moves ... bugs, yappee dogs, pitbulls that barrel her over, and her kitties ... She tires herself out from straining trying to get love and attention... Joanna, Myself, and the Kitties give her hours of attention, yet it still never seems to be good enough :(

soooo ...... Dad decided to do something about it. We were thinking about adopting another dog a couple weeks back, but that all changed when we found out Kaylee had some hips issues and she shouldn't be as active as most normal puppies. The last week or so, Kaylee has seemed to do real well, along with her bowel movements straightening out (Panacur and Flagyl) are lifesavers :)

Anyways ... Against the advice of some Newf.netters (sorry guys) ... We decided to find that "perfect" match for Kaylee. We started visiting a local animal shelter (LA City Pound) for about a week, and found a beautiful, 8 year old, German Shepherd/Lab mix (so they say) This dog was non-stop love. Loved humans, dogs, you name it she loved it. She's got spunk to her, especially for being 8, yet a very calm/motherly nature as well.

She's had a rough life, brought in a an "OTC" (Over the Counter) Stray with a possible owner since she was microchipped. Brought in Mid April (2 months ago) ... Owners were notified and they didn't want her anymore, so there she sat. Everytime I went and saw her over the past week, we fell more in love with her. She just kindly laid in her kennel, then when she saw us, her eyes lit up, and she calmly got up and walked over for some love. She never tore things up or even barked while the other dogs when bonkers.

We knew she was the one for Kaylee, and we picked her up yesterday. Our local shelter/pound run by the City Of LA is AMAZING. one of the lowest kill rate shelters anywhere. They had a pit bull/am staff that had been there for 9 months ... they even started getting her trained weekly, etc... and she was finally adopted Monday!!! AMAZING ... 9 months in the pound for a Pit Bull !!!

So, out of respect for our shelter and the amazing job they do with dogs, cats, and bunnies, we kept the name given to our new baby by the shelter.

Introducing .... CoCo !!! (Plus, we call Kaylee ... KayKay) ... So now we have KayKay and CoCo :kgo_027:

p.s. -- We still don't own a newf but still plan too in the next year or so after we find a good local breeder, and I thank you all for letting us continue to share our girls with you. this is one of the best forums I have ever been on.

Soooo Cute!!!! and Kaylee has gotten so big. I think excellent idea. I have ALWAYS had, at least two dogs. They keep each other company when Mom and Dad are busy. Plus, that good looking young lady needed a loving home. Looks like a match made in heaven! CONGRATS!

It is an interesting mix..and somehow..there seems to be pit bull..in the markings..but..at 8 years, and being a gentle soul..you may have just 'lucked out'..with a sweet and sharing 'twosome'. The pictures tell a story with so much pleasure to share..fun to come. :) ina n HB

Ina -- I think you're right. She does look to have maybe some pit or am-staff in her as well. Only way to find out what she is, is through dna .... i kind of like not knowing though ... she's a sweetheart, and thats all we care about :)

Kaylee does look like she is smiling with joy at having a sister...very sweet. Thanks for sharing with us. Two dogs are so much better than one. Katie is so much happier now that Louis is here to play with her. Congratulations to ALL of you :allg069: Can't wait to hear all about the adventures of Kaylee and CoCo (with pictures of course :) )

Huggs to sweet Coco..no telling what kind of life she has had....poor girl..but now she has heaven ! I agree with Ina..the brindeling does not come from either breed the shelter mentioned. Also her bone is too small for that cross. She is a sweetheart anyhow...so who cares....Julie

She is gorgeous! And, what a wonderful thing you did bringing her into your life. Older dogs make such good pets/companions. Enjoy your furkids!

Awwww, she's lovely. Thank you for taking in an old gal like CoCo, the mature dogs often never find their way to forever homes. There's something so special about the oldies. I agree she absolutely looks like a lovely little pit mix.

Kaylee is clearly thrilled to have a big sister! Looks like she's making a royal pest of herself! Hopefully having a calm, senior dog around will have a calming effect on Kaylee.

How is CoCo coping in her new home with a spazzy puppy? How long have you had her now? Has she started initiating play with Kaylee or is the pup always the one initiating play so far?

In some of the pictures CoCo's got the wide eyed/panting face that suggests to me that she's stressed. (I say that because I recognize that look from when Floyd pesters everyone! Ha, ha! He too likes to sit on their heads when they don't feel like playing, and it usually ends in him being told off!) To me, I see a dog that is a little overwhelmed with that puppy climbing on her in those pictures. Have you had a chance to set up a quiet area for her that is a "puppy free zone" where she can go to rest on her own when she needs a break? I think that is really important to offer her.

Since all of this is new to her, she may not be ready to start telling the pup off just yet, so be sure to keep an eye on things and make sure Kaylee is being respectful of her and giving her space. Puppies will be puppies, and a senior dog that is in a new environment and unsure of its place in the pack may need a bit of assistance setting boundaries. To her playtime may not last as long as Kaylees idea of playtime, so it's important that Kaylee learn to read those cues that playtime is over (like the curling up in a ball) and respect that.

It takes a little while for everyone to figure out their place in the pack and get comfortable with each other. I'm sure you are all so excited to welcome this sweet girl to your family and I look forward to seeing more pictures as CoCo settles into a routine and becomes more comfortable.

Congrats on the new addition. :)

Julie ... Yeah, we are now definitely thinking some pit ... I am going to take a side profile shot. Her behind is much lower and her muscle/bone structure looks like a greyhound:shocker: That would also account for the brindle color and the very thin snout face. So, the wife and I now think she is part Greyhound and part pit bull. She was atleast mixed with a smaller breed.

Who knows, all we care about is how much of a HUGE love she is. Not a single complaint ... :hugs:

BTW, one of Katie's many nicknames is KayKay :) Louis is LouLou.
Great Minds think alike. Kaylee has about 5-6 nicknames used on a daily basis. poor girl probably thinks her name is Sweet Pea, KayKay, Kaylee, Cuddles, HEY!, and NO! .... :roflmao:

Exactly !!! ... lol ... Day 3 with CoCo so far, and Kaylee is starting to calm down when they are together just slightly. CoCo put Kaylee in her place the first day. She is sensitive with her ears and if kaylee nibbles on her ears or starts knawing (sp?) on her tail, she gives her a quick snap bark/growl/yip and kaylee backs up real quick. Then the process starts all over again. I'm sure CoCo gets tired of her, but she has been a COMPLETE ANGEL towards Kaylee. She really puts up with alot from her and CoCo even likes our CATS !!!! :shocker: She just watches them run around and play, and in the 3 days we have had CoCo, the cats trust her now more then Kaylee ...

CoCo's first day with daddy was at the office. She came in, I left my office door open, and she greeted everyone that came into the office. Once done, she would come, plop down next to daddy with a huge smile on her face.

CoCo favorite thing to do is lay her head on your lap for love. she will sit next to you while on the computer, tv, etc... and just want love. if your face gets even remotely close to facing down, its kisses galore.

CoCo isn't a HUGE player, but she lets Kaylee tumble all over her, and when they walk they have some fun. She does everything with a friendly wag of her tail (even while correcting kaylee) ... We honestly couldn't have asked for a better dog ...

TODAY KAYLEE STARTS OBEDIENCE CLASSES !!!! :dance01::dance01::dance01:

BEEN WAITING FOR THIS DAY TO COME SINCE WE GOT HER !!!! :icon_bb:

And YES ... We will make sure to take the camera to remember this very special occasion !!!

Thanks for all your support and kind comments :)
