What is a "pouch cove" newf?

I've read a few posts mentioning pouch cove newfs ...

Does this refer to particular kennel? A particular dam/sire? A particular look?

I guess I'm most interested in knowing what a pouch cove newfoundland looks like in comparison to non-pouch cove newfoundlands.

Thanks!

Hi Kitty
back in 1988 1999
when i was showing my sampson, PC was starting to make its move in the showring world.
it is considered by some the dynasty, setting new trends new looks that a lot of people prefer, some refer to them as mushy faces, others rave about them, it all comes down to personal preference.
you can see photos of pouch cove dogs all over the country, on various websites, winning at dog shows all over.
i prefer the old type newf, not the shorter snout, but the topmast type.
everyone has their preference and by no means should anyone bad mouth any one kennel.
just that some see the newf thru different eyes.
you can see the PC type dog that won at eukanuba under the post below and noahs cove graciously provided a link to his photo.

Pouch Cove is a kennel name. My Rory has some Pouch Cove in her as do some other newfs on this board. If you go to the "Eukanuba Dog Show" thread under the "Showplace" catagory, you can see some pics.

Brady has some "Pouch Cove" in him as well. The newf that was second in the working class on the Eukenuba dog show had Pouch Cove in his name.

a good example is the paintings sir edwin landseer did of newfoundlands.
topmast kennel is in canada, marge wilmott
a very well known breeder who has put out wonderful type and moving newfoundlands, they do not have short muzzles you see in a lot of todays newfs.

I must jump in here, as well. I, too, agree with sarnewfie, I tend toward the more old-fashioned head. I have very good friends that have PC dogs, and they think the world of them. While they are nice looking, I lean toward the Topmast heads.

I think part of my personal prefreence comes from growing up with a Little Bear Kennel dog, Murphy, that was delivered to my dad my Mr. Chern while he was at a show in Boston in the late 50s. Every year we got a newf picture with their christmas cards. When I think of a newf, I think of the Little Bear look, or more currently, the Topmast look.

In our house now, we have Angus who looks similar to Murphy. Then there's Mowgli who REALLY looks like a Landseer head from the 1860s, very shallow, similar to the Landseer painting "Saved". Mudji is still a puppy so we are not too sure how the final head will look. At present, he looks like the head I want, similar to Murphy's.

At shows I have seen dogs that are from other kennels that have heads that are not in the PC type. As not being one that shows, I am mostly interested in a newf with a newf personality. While looks are important, I think the bonding of owner to pet is the most important thing. Besides, all my newfs make me laugh....

just my opinion.....

Does anyone know of a good place or book that has decent examples of both....or names I could search on in the pics forum to see a few of each? Just curious....both look fantastic.

Thank you for your suggestion, Sarnewfie. I've done a lot of surfing tonight to look at the artwork of Sir Edwin Landseer and the newfs of Topmast -- unfortunately I didn't turn up too much on head shapes because my computer crash twice and I got too frustrated to surf much more. Oh well, I think I understand the gist of it now -- I'm thinking of the PC-style heads as more Saint-ish than the older style head shape. I know that is a very simplistic way of looking at it.

Personally, I really like Pouch Cove look. I like the shorter blockey nose. To me the long noses look like they have another breed mixed with them. Sara has the old type nose and Samantha has the PC look. Here are photos of both. First is Sara then Samantha

ok now mind you i am not critisizing anyone here!
i dont care for the short muzzle becouse the majority of newfs that have it also have huge heads with heavy cheeks that weigh down the eyes, thus saggy eyelids when they should be tight, i am going to do some digging for photos that i have and post them here.
i also have noticed how HUGE the ears are becoming in the making of the huge heads and shorter muzzles.
i guess it is all in the eye of the beholder.

Bubba too has the shorter blocky nose. I too prefer that look. So far no sagging of the eyes that I've noticed, they seem tight. Is this something that will definitely happen because of the shorter nose and heavier cheeks? He does have big ears though. I'd say he looks a lot more like Samantha than Sarah, but they're both beautiful! :D

Hey, thanks for the pics! I find the differences really interesting within the same breed. I think both are beautiful dogs.....especially if they are not to the extreme one way or another. I have seens some PCs that had eyes so droopy and red showing all I could think was how much they could use some Visine. I like the tighter eyes and reduced drool of my TM flavored Dazy, but if I was hand picking I would welcome a little more PC in her. PC really screams "newfy" to me. Feel free to keep the pics or references flowing!

Now of my three newfs, Sara, with the older style head, has the longest ears and Sam (Pouch Cove/Kaylar/Topmast breeding)has the shortest ears. Panda (Topmast Breeding)has longer ears than Sam but shorter than Sara's. You can see for yourself in the photos I have posted above.

My aviator is also a photo of Sam

""i dont care for the short muzzle becouse the majority of newfs that have it also have huge heads with heavy cheeks that weigh down the eyes, thus saggy eyelids when they should be tight"""",
notice key word is majority.
also what else is in her pedigree, that is interesting, none of the topmast types i have or have seen have ears like your girl ;) not a critism just curious what else is in her pedigree!

i noticed that in her photo! aND sydney right now has long ears in that photo but today? he is growing into the ears.he is young and head is undeveloped
Jeanie
did you say calypso bear was in the pedigree of the first photo above?
that may explain the long ears, this is the foundation of kaylar, a beautiful gal, and here is her page and king arthurs page, back in the 80s i think is when calypso was around back than the newfs looked way different, so this could be why your girl looks that way.

i have to look back at dancer and see if calypso is in there! thanx for posting that photo.

Newfs Forever

SAR and Jeannie,

Love those pictures! To the uneducated like myself re: types, they are all beautiful!

Actually, is it correct to say that Pouch Cove is the largest breeder of newfs in the States or maybe the world? And where does Sweet Bay come in here? Are the Adlers actively breeding still?

I am trying to think of any other large breeding kennels.

TIA,

Sue
