What is a "pouch cove" newf?

Thanks, everyone, for the information! The pictures that were posted were a big help, especially the Sam/Sara contrast and SAR's picture of Sydney and pup.

Are there any behavioral or health differences between Pouch Cove and old-type newfs, or is it just an aesthetics thing? It's sounding like it's mostly just a looks thing ...

This is great!! Thanks SAR!!

I agree that most differences between lines come down to personal preference.

I do have a question though, type in working dogs to a large extent can be related back to the original purpose of the dog.

In your opinion SAR what deviations from type would affect the newfs capacity to perform his intended bred for tasks?

ie:- droopy eyes would not be very good in salt water swimming
- would too tall diminish swimming strength in the hind legs
- depth of chest affects lung capacity and stamina
- can changes in muzzle length alter the capacity to close the nostrils when swimming underwater
- can changes to coat type make the coat less water proof

you get the idea.

thanks, Anne

The first photo I posted is of Sara. She of course is a rescue and we have no idea of her breeding. None whatsoever. Now Samantha in the 2nd photo has Pouch Cove/Kaylar. The Kaylar goes back to Top Mast (King Arthur)

Sar said: majority of newfs that have it also have huge heads with heavy cheeks that weigh down the eyes, thus saggy eyelids when they should be tight"""",
Geesh Christine, why did you have to make a blanket statement like that?? ;) I went thru the past 5 years of NCA Annual of Titlists and found as many "huge heads with heavy cheeks" with the saggy eyelids as I did the "Old-type" head who also had "saggy eyelids." (kennel-type mentioned either in this thread or other thread) My opinion is it has nothing to do with size of head as it does with being ectropian or just plain old loose eye with haw showing.

Oh, Calypso was whelped in 1987.

ps. Doesn't matter how long the ears are as long as they go to the inner corner of the eye on the same side. Larger head is going to be larger ear in order for that ear to go to the inner corner of the eye as required by the standard.

You forgot the rest of the standard RE: ears. "When the ear is brought forward, it reaches to the inner corner of the eye on the same side."

Well. I like the head of our guy! LOL! He's got a real big head, and he's only 8 months. He's got drool that can put a Masiff to shame!

His lips are sooo big and handsome that he was able to hide a herring in them at the age of 5 months or so!!
LOL!! But then he's our boy and no matter what he looks like we'd think he was a Champion waiting to be seen! LOL!
His ears are triangular too! And they fit his head!!
But really:
It's interesting that the standard can be seen in many different names. As this conversation was cooking, I had to look up some of the CH in our baby's pedigree. Some of them are in the books we have. I can see so much likeness to his ancestors. I wish I could see some more pictures of the earlier generations.
Has anyone been able to track down photos of your Newfie ancestors several generations back?

Some of the old black and white photo's are very wonderful!! I'm glad the breeders long ago (and today) are breeding. Without them, we wouldn't have our beautiful Newfies at all!!

Hi all,
I read this post with great interest, But I kept thinking why does the name Pouch Cove sound fimiliar, well it was driving me crazy
, until I check our last litters pedigree on the stud dogs side and found:

Pouch Love's Patriot of Cayuga CH
John Big Ben of Pouch Cove CH
Pouch Cove's Treasure Chest CH
Pouch Cove's favourite Son AM CH
Highland Bear of Pouch Cove CH
AD LIB of Pouch Cove CH
Schooner Yosef Of Newton Ark Souvenir of Pouch Cove CH
Highland Skye of Pouch Cove CH

Leah also has Yankee Pedlar of Pouch Cove in her line.

Have you heard of any of these, I didn't relise the line had so many American Dog in it.

Leahs father is Newf House Scandinavian Warrior for Merrybear (imp) CH he has 49 cc and was top working dog (dog world 96). Our equivalent to your Pouch Cove would be Merrybear Newfoundlands they have produced some of the top show dogs in England and I know that Marvin Gaye of Merybear is top irish show champion, so I guess Leah comes from the best of both, which is really good to know, I would love to know more about Pouch Cove, so if anyone has any old pictures of any of the dogs I mentioned it would be great to see them!
Regards
Kelly

I believe it's in The Newfoundland by Emmy Bruno that shows about 6 different( accepted by kennel clubs around the world )profiles on one page. She is a vet and breeder and really knows her stuff about the physical aspects, or so it seems to me, a mere student.

Hi, being new to computors I was amazed to be able to find pictures of my puppy's greatgrandparents on the net. I just typed in the names, Topmast's Checkers and Blue Heaven's Mornings at Seven. The people I work with are tired of hearing about this so I thought I would share with you all.

Kelly, out of the list you posted, I checked Riley's pedigree and it has 5 of the Pouch Cove names listed. I think if you search under Pouch Cove, you'll find some pictures from you list.

What an interesting topic. I never knew that there were different "types" of Newfie "looks." Just a few weeks ago, my sister gave me the 2003 Newfoundland Calendar. As we were looking at all of the photos of each month, we did notice that some had skinnier faces and others had a big, block head. There is one in particular of a Newf peeking out from a door that looks exactly like Yogi. I looked at Yogi's pedigree and found several Topmast's in his lineage which explains his thin face. Although, I think that Yogi is a block head of a different nature :D
