The only thing I want to see in a breeder is that they are dedicated to improving the breed. Period...

You need to want to produce pups that are more than the sum of their parents. Showing in conformation is really the best way to learn what makes one newf a better physical specimen of the breed. You have to learn to see the faults in your own dogs and in potential stud dogs. I can almost guarantee that the best dog to sire pups from your bitch doesn't live in your house.

One of the overlooked parts of showing in conformation is getting to know other breeders, seeing their dogs, finding like-minded friends and mentors who can lead you thru the process of becoming a GREAT breeder. Breeding a great working dog that doesn't look like a Newf isn't any better than breeding a great show dog that can't do the jobs they were bred to do. In my opinion, if you aren't willing to take on the whole enchilada, there's no point to becoming a breeder.
