Tips for staying cool?

It's been on the humid side here the past week so I've been looking for ways to keep Griffin cool. I've tried fans but he doesn't like them blowing on him and always tries to move out of the "wind" range. He's been barking through out the night for the past few days and I think it's because he's too warm and wants a drink. Any tips on how to keep him cool in his crate at night? He sleeps on the bare tray, and his crate is in the kitchen which is one the cooler rooms of the house. We were hoping to hold off on turning the AC on, but we might just need to bite the bullet.

Your gonna be amazed at how many bullets will be bitten for that fur baby. They will be worth it, every one. Have you been looking at bigger vehicles yet?

you could try putting in a cold, wet towel in there for him to lay on, it might help. you can also crank fans and try bouncing them off the walls around him..even just the general air movement will help him feel cooler.

if he's old enough you don't think he'd chew on it, you can look into a cool core bed.

Can't really help. We're in FL so AC went on full time about 3 weeks ago. Thunder sleeps on the tile for coolest spot.

We're also in NH and we've had the A/C on for Maggie for the last 2 weeks. I also make sure she has access to water all night, otherwise she gets me up 2-3 times for a drink.

A wet towel in the crate will help, along with some air circulation, but with the temps we've had during the day, the a/c and a fan is really the only thing that keeps Maggie comfortable during the day.

Since we've had her we definitely turn on the a/c a lot sooner than we used to!

Scuba sleeps in his crate under the ceiling fan, which is on high (only at night b/c it's like the arctic winds when the ceiling fan is on high). The AC has also been on. I haven't tried floor fans yet.

We bought huge window a/cs for the downstairs when we got Cooper. When we moved, central air was on the must-have list.

Send him over here. We have had to put the heat on most evenings still, it's so cold!!
My guys would be delighted to have him here :)

We are also in NH and don't have central air, but do have a room air conditioner in one of the guest rooms for the dogs. They sleep in there and spend time in there when we are away, when we are around they play on the deck in the kiddie pool or pant in our faces.

As soon as it gets past 70 our air goes on for Belle and Bentley and our sweaters go on us.....
ditto here! AC has been on for a month!

I remember the first night we had Hemi he panted in his crate all night. I still feel guilty about it! I thought the temp in the house was fine. But I learned quickly (as you have) that chilly to me is still warm to him. I sleep with a down comforter year round! lol.

The fan was a savior for us. We set it right on him in his crate. He loved it when he was a pup but now he'll move away from fans. I feel like when he was a wee one it was even harder to keep him cool. I used to put soft ice packs on the floor under his belly where he was laying. That helped a lot! he loved them! When he was in his crate, I'd slide two ice packs under the crate tray so that he couldn't eat/puncture them, but could still feel them through the tray. I think I got the ice packs from CVS. good luck!

ps. I grew up in NH. live free or die, baby! ;)

Ice packs under the tray, such a good idea! How big were the ones you bought? Luckily the weather has cooled off the past week and he's stopped barking all night, so now we can stall on putting on the AC and I can go out and buy some ice packs!

BTW, love your blog. What a HANDSOME fella that Hemi is !

-aww, thanks!

the ice packs I got are only 7.5 X 11.5 inches. I took both and put them side by side under the tray. You might be able to find bigger ones! The ones I have are blue and say on them "CVS gentle fabric cold compress"
