I am sadly writing that Thunder our 4 year old black newfie, died Tuesday, February 10, 2004 of unknown causes. He began having trouble breathing at about 2:30 pm EST, that day and his stomach was not distended like bloat, but we rushed him to the vet. By the time we arrived, his tongue was turning blue and xrays showed fluid in his lungs, but his trachea was clear and there was no obstruction. One lung had collapsed (partially) and at 4:00 pm EST his heart arrested. CPR and O2 and medication, nothing would start his heart again. He had never been ill and had just passed a full physical on 2/1/2004 when he got his new rabies shot.
Neither of our other two newfies are ill. We had them checked today, blood and xrays. Sara seems to have a larged heart but no symptoms. Next month they are going to do an echocardiogram to make sure she is ok. Except for a dysplasic elbow, she has also been perfectly healthy. But she is almost 8 now and some changes might be expected.
We are baffled about Thunder. Tissue and blood have been sent for cytology and culture. We hope to find out more from this.
We are heartbroken but know we will see him again at the Rainbow Bridge where he can now breathe easily and play happily.
