Thunder crossed the Rainbow Bridge

I am sadly writing that Thunder our 4 year old black newfie, died Tuesday, February 10, 2004 of unknown causes. He began having trouble breathing at about 2:30 pm EST, that day and his stomach was not distended like bloat, but we rushed him to the vet. By the time we arrived, his tongue was turning blue and xrays showed fluid in his lungs, but his trachea was clear and there was no obstruction. One lung had collapsed (partially) and at 4:00 pm EST his heart arrested. CPR and O2 and medication, nothing would start his heart again. He had never been ill and had just passed a full physical on 2/1/2004 when he got his new rabies shot.

Neither of our other two newfies are ill. We had them checked today, blood and xrays. Sara seems to have a larged heart but no symptoms. Next month they are going to do an echocardiogram to make sure she is ok. Except for a dysplasic elbow, she has also been perfectly healthy. But she is almost 8 now and some changes might be expected.

We are baffled about Thunder. Tissue and blood have been sent for cytology and culture. We hope to find out more from this.

We are heartbroken but know we will see him again at the Rainbow Bridge where he can now breathe easily and play happily.

Niki,

I'm so sorry that you lost your boy Thunder. It sounds like you did everything you could for him. I hope that the vet can give you some answers as to what caused this. It doesn't make it hurt any less but it does help give some closure.
Thunder will be waiting for you at the Bridge, & while he's waiting, my big girl Lady will have a new friend to play with.

Thunder was met at the gaits of rainbow bridge by many of the newfs whome we have had the pleasure of meeting on the board, and some that this board never knew.
My own 13 year old sampson is there to guide him around, he will be waiting for your arrival.
our thoughts go out to you at this most difficult time.

Ugggh, I'm so sorry to hear about Thunder. :( It's so shocking when there is no "reason" - but maybe his youth was needed on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge to help keep the elders in line!

Again, I'm sorry to hear about him leaving so soon.

Thank you all for your comfort and wonderful thoughts and prayers. So far we only have the cytology findings and they show lung hemmorage consistant with heart failure. Now the question of what causes heart failure in a dog with no symptoms 9 days earlier. I'll try to see if I can post my picture of all 3 taken at Christmas this year.

Again, thank you to all for your comforting words.

How sad for you it must be to "lose" Thunder, without ever a hint of sickness.

I send prayers of finding peace among the sadness, yet joy among the memories....for all of those "touched" by Thunder.

Thank you for posting.

Niki,

I wish your welcome to Newf Net wasn't suring such a very sad time for you, yet I am so very glad that you've found NN... it's am amazing place with very wonderful people.

It's always devastating when they leave us.... yet when it's so sudden, as it was with Thunder, and family members have had no time to begin to prepare, it's even more devastating. I'm so very very sorry. I know that we would all love to see pictures of Thunder, and your other newfs. Pictures, along with memories, can be such a wonderful comfort, as is the knowledge that he's at the bridge waiting for you.

Good thoughts and prayers are coming your way...

Annie
