The wonders of canned pumpkin

I just wanted to share a testemonial for adding canned pumpkin each day to the food..Scarlet is nearly 7 months old and we fed her Abady dry kibble along with some Abady canned muscle meat..From the time we brought her home she had mushy stools..After several trips to the vet, stool samples in tow, and a course of Flagyl, the problem was still there..She continued to gain weight and the loose stools didnt seem to affect her in any way..At a recent Newf gathering in Mystic, Georgie recommended we add canned pumpkin(not the pie filling) to Scarlets diet..we also switched from Abady to Blue Buffalo brand...Within 2 days she had formed stool..I believe the pumpkin had alot to do with solving the issue....I add about 2 tablespoons of the pumpkin in the morning mixed with the food....I hope this helps others who have dogs with similar issues...:sunflower:

Ahh! Another mama who has discovered a well known little helper.
Good for you!
Yes, Pumpkin does wonders. It can also be used as a little treat here and there as well.
I think I was first introduced to it by Donna (Ardeagold) a year or so ago.
Good luck with your little girl. She's a cutie.

Wonders of canned pumpkin

As I understand the benefits of caned pumpkin, it works both ways...It aids digestion because it is high in fiber...For dogs that have loose stools, the pumpkin absorbs the excess water in the intestine so to firm up the stool..It is also used for constipation adding the fiber content and aiding the intestinal motility...I am sure it adds some vitamins and nutrients as well...Sylvia:sunflower:

It also works wonders for dogs with lots of gas! Boston Terriers have profound gas, I hear bulldogs are prone to it as well. I used to feed my guy a little bit of pumpkin with his food and his "episodes" were far less frequent or potent. He also got a spoon full of plain yogurt, that helped too.

I highly recommend it for anyone who has a canine friend who tends to drop a silent but deadly bomb around the house.

Ha...good luck finding any though, at least around here. The shelves are empty due to poor growing conditions. I only know this because today is my sons birthday and he has been craving homemade pumpkin pie and I went to 3 grocery stores to get canned pumpkin and finally asked the manager why no one had any! He said they should have some in October some time. My son will be eating Sara Lee's version today though!!:)

Will fresh puree'd work? Assume so but please let me know - we'll have quite an abundance around here soon! I usually cook and freeze it for wintertime side dishes, soups and pancakes but we can share with Coop!

Thanks,
Mary

You normally get it in the baking isle of any grocery store. As everyone has already mentioned make sure that the can reads 100% pumpkin and not pumpkin pie filling. There should be no ingredients in the can except pumpkin (and maybe water).

just one additional note, it's also good for dogs on a diet, just replace a portion of the kibble with pumpkin and it fills them right up...sort of like the green bean diet.

I agree that the canned pumpkin is hard to find these days...I also had to go to 3 different stores and finally found it at Shaw's...I like the idea of pureeing your own pumpkin, but my best shot at cooking is boiling water...Kinda leaves me store hopping for the canned pumpkin!

I've used real pumpkin in the past. Scooped the seeds out for me, YUM, then threw half the pumpkin on a baking sheet and baked until soft. Scooped out the pumpkin and put into containers to freeze. Ended up with enough to last a whole winter! Ebony and Ross get pumpkin daily.
When it gets close to Thanksgiving Sam's Club carries Libby's 100% Pumpkin, so I stock up if I don't have enough from the garden.

We use fresh and not puree'd, just cooked. My dogs love it, we have no poop issues.

Perfect, thanks! And for those considering this method, it freezes great in 1-quart ziplocks. Just put 1-2 c in a ziplock, label date/quantity, and stack flat in the freezer - takes up very little room that way, and defrosts quickly.

HTH!

all this talk about poop...:)

Only a group like us would find a way to have pages and pages of discussion related to firming up the dog poop...I am just glad we all understand each other. :goofy:
