Steely at 1 year

We went to the doctor man today. Mostly a checkup, although a main concern of mine is her constant itchiness. And while getting off of Pro-Plan and starting onto TOTW seemed to help (mostly with her ears), it didn't nip any scratching or flaky skin in the bud like I'd hoped.
She is starting on an antihistamine today. 2 of them twice daily. I've given her children's benadryl before and it mildly alleviates, so I'm hoping this will really take care of her discomfort. If not, he'll refer us to a dermatologist to get to the bottom of what exactly her allergies are.
I was concerned that she may have had staph because her nips in her mid-section are a little swollen & they have scabs around them. He said no. It's just from constantly kicking at her stomach to itch herself. Thank GOD. My brother's white Lab just had a staph infection with sores all over her feet.
He listened to her heart- sounded great.
She also has what ya'll have referred to in past threads as "newfie trembles". It's in her right leg & she doesn't do it incessantly although she randomly did it in front of Dr. A. And like all of you have commented on this, he said it was nothing for me to worry about.
I made an appointment for her to be spayed. Two weeks from today. My breeder recommended 9 months to a year, so we're doing 13 months. I'll remind ya'll on the day she's going in so you can keep her in your prayers. She's completely out of the crate at this point. I trust her alone in the house. I have to keep bedroom and bathroom doors shut, though, because she loves to rifle through the trash. Anyway, I was told to not put the crate up just yet in case I need it to assist in keeping still during her recovery.
She was such a good girl. Very well behaved and that's saying something. Here's why. Our vet, as I've mentioned before, is one of my best friends' father. She and her sister are vet techs. Our doc has retired and sold his practice. But he still comes in several times a week to consult and basically ease his patients into his absence. And my friend and her sister have since stopped working there since the sale of the practice. However, they were both in helping their dad today and between the two of them brought their 4 Jack Russels & 1 Weimareiner. Steely usually gets all crazy excited over the thought of a little dog. Hayden's (my friend) JRT is named Duelly and he absolutely loathes Steely. She pesters him to death. But she layed there and he stood between her two front legs. Miracle.
Anyway, that's what I mean by good girl. We sat in the breakroom waiting for Haydie to get there and she sat there and minded her manners. Dr. A wanted to know why I was wearing such high heels toting Steely around like that. Meh, I trust her to not kill me, I guess! :kgo_017:
Anyway, she weighs 106 lbs. A whopping 16 lbs. more than the last time we were there several months ago.
We managed to get out of there 1 1/2 hours later with a bottle of Animal Pharmaceuticals, Inc. soap free Aloe & Oatmeal shampoo and a bottle of Chlorhexidine shampoo.
I'll keep ya'll updated on Steely's allergy progress.
Great day at the vet! I can't wait to go home and love on my girl!!!

Sorry to hear that "little" Steely is still bothered by the itchies...Great to hear she is otherwise robust and healthy, though.
Gabe has had the tremor as long as I can remember.
As far as allergies go, chicken does it for Sophie...I believe if I were to feed her chicken, her ears would eventually just swell shut!

Yes, it can be hard to pin down the culprit, or culprits. Though chicken is a common one, I think. Could it be environmental, instead of dietary?
The tzu sleeps in bed with me...A couple of years ago she suddenly started having trouble...Her paws and stomach, especially, got nasty. I finally figured out that her trouble started about the time I switched laundry detergents! Switched back..end of problem.
It can be such a little thing like that....
Here's hoping the antihistamines will give her some relief and not make her feel yucky.
  Steely

I don't think it's chicken. Her TOTW is the pacific formula with fish. Of course I'll go to the website to double check the ingredients. I'm just about positive that it's enviromental. She loves to lay in the grass and eat sticks before I bust her and take it away. My parents have always had Labs and one that they had when my brother and I were kids had crazy allergies. My mom said to grass and trees. She had to get shots regularly.

What a good girl Steely is, and I am sorry to hear about her itchyness still. I ended up having my golden allergy tested cause she was so itchy with gastro problems. It has really helped me to keep her away from what she is allergic to.

Sorry to hear that you're still dealing with the itchies. It's no fun trying to pin down a cause. I'm impressed that Miss Steely can stay alone out in the house. She really is a very very good girl!

Hope you can figure it out. I took Lucy to an allergist, who pretty much told me what I already knew...NO beef or dairy or grains...keep the flea and tick treatment current, as she reacts badly to those bites, and keep her clean (Chlorhexiderm shampoo). Lucy is also allergic to the rabies vaccine, so that complicates a lot of things (can't take her anywhere that requires dogs to "be current on vaccines", even though we titer for antibodies). She's also worse during the summer months...but we can't decide if it's grasses, the buggies that live in the grasses, or the molds from so much moisture.

I'm sorry she is dealing with this. We have been through it with the allergy shots, etc. There are some good allergists in the DFW area. Hope you get it figured out soon.

And, I'm glad to read your sentence about the "Newfie trembles." I have been so afraid of what Darcy's leg is doing - kind of shaking, like a neurological thing. I will do a search and see what this might be all about!

Post some new pictures of Steely!!

Hope the antihistamines help but don't make her too drowsy. Maybe the allergist can help, might be worth it. Chance seemed to have allergies to wheat. He got goopy eyes and licked his paws. His ears were also bad. Once I removed wheat from his diet and gave him Prozyme (a digestive enzyme) he got better.

Read this thread, Diane. It's like the only helpful thing I've really managed to located on the leg trembles. Funny that it also came from NN. I printed it out and gave it to our vet today and he reaffirmed what everyone said on this thread. It's not "normal". Something causes it, but it's nothing for me to worry over. She actually did it in front of him and he said at that time it was most like the way she was sitting.
I've been afraid of it too. Aaron keeps telling me that he thinks it's because she's excited. I was also worried because her middle nippies were swollen and scabs. Scared it could be staph or whatever. Aaron said it's probably from itching. When our vet confirmed all of this today, he told me that maybe he should become a vet. What a frackin' comedian.

Lori- I gave her 2 antihistamines at dinner time & I can't really tell if they're making her drowsy. She's laying around as much as she normally does. She's jumped up a couple of times over us getting food from the kitchen. So, she can't be that drowsy. She doesn't seem to tired to beat me down for treats. So, her appetite seems on point!

Hurray for being such a good girl at the vet.
I hope you get an answer to her allergies soon. We found out with Bär that he is allergic to shellfish. His head swell up, itchy skin, flakes & rash. All from 1 bag of Orijen 6 fish.
