Spoiling an Old Dog

This is something that seems to be mentioned a lot here. Moonlight is my third really old Newfoundland. I find that the more you have these precious Seniors, the more you want to spoil them. Didn't even realize this until just recently when I turned the ceiling fan on in the family room, even though the furnace was running and it was below freezing outside. When she looks at you and looks at the fan, you turn the fan on. Same with her water. Fresh water almost every time she drinks - a must. Why? Some inconsiderate dog (herself) has slimed the water. Yuck. Blankets in crate arranged just so. A milkbone after morning pee, "gravy", veggies and lean meat on kibble, a Blue Dog cookie after every meal and of course there's the "wipies". To prevent UTIs which she is prone to due to an inverted vulva and short urethra, she throws herself onto her back several times a day and we must use a baby wipe or medicated pad to clean her private parts and then give her rubbies. Oh, the carpet must be vacuumed at least once a day as a freshly cleaned carpet is a treat. And, if desired, the humans must accompany her outside to praise her every evacuation. Spoiled - my dogs - never. But, then I think about the fact that they won't be around much longer. What will I do without Moonlight. She's been my "puppy" all her life, and when she's gone I will be Newfless at an age that is pretty much beyond tackling a puppy. Spoil her - you betcha.

Funny about the fans. I have two small fans, one near a vent to blow on Snuffles when the AC is running. He still likes to lay by them, sometimes his nose just inches away, and yes one is on right now that he slept near all night when I let the house go down to the low 60s.

Been having some poop accidents in the house. One day just getting him up to go out, he could not hold it. So now I carry a special treats in my pocket and give it to him if he poops outside. Kind of like puppy training. :) Of course if he does it in the house, he is not chastised. Went 8 or 9 years with only one poop accident in the house and one pee accident that was not his fault at all. So far peeing is still not a issue. He loves to drink from a hose, so I keep a short hose on the spigot by the porch. The problem is it freezes up this time of year. I just put a quick disconnect on it yesterday so I can take it in or fully drain it.

And if he wants to lay outside on the porch, a lot of times I take my lap top and sit with him. He *calls* me if I don't.

Yes, my old man is SPOILED rotten, and I am glad I can. 2 days from 11 years and 9 months. He sees the vet on the 11th for blood work and general checkup.

Spoil them rotten! Fans run year round here for them, even after the kids complain they are cold, I turn them back on for them, bedroom window slightly cracked too. We also do the wipes and she's got the routine down pat. And she's the younger one, she loves her massage's and you know they both get all the treats with the grandson dropping his Cheetos and muffins :) I've recently tried kiefer once a day for stomach issues and I will say we do have improvement with poops.

Nothing wrong with a whole load of spoiling.

This is why I often say these dogs are the lucky ones to be so loved and well cared for, so many dogs are not as fortunate. We also as their caregivers and family are truly blessed because life is so much richer to be loved unconditionally by these dogs. It is a powerful thing the bond between a dog and their human.

My Dozer will be 8 in April. Yes already I turn OFF the heat at night, open the bedroom window AND turn on the fan for him. I can always put more covers on.......

Moonlight has been gone almost a year and a half now. It seems like yesterday, and I still wish I could spoil her as much as possible. I miss her as much today, as I did that day. It think it's because I was/am pretty sure she will be my last Newfoundland. We are just getting too old, with no help, to physically handle a dog this big. I spent most of my life, up until I got one, wanting a Newf. I was blessed for about thirty years. Now, we have Daisy, or Kentucky Porch Dog, but she's not a Newf. It's not the same. So, this is a gentle reminder, that if you have a senior Newf, please cherish every moment. Spoil them rotten and count your blessings, because when they're gone life is just not the same.

Ours turned 8 April 15th and they have not slowed down one bit. We have ceiling fans going all the time in the bedroom so when they sleep the air is blowing down on them. I hope Calvin and Hobbes are able to live to a ripe old age

I am blessed with an eleven year old that like to snuggle in on comfy beds... She hates fans... Fans are for our Katy who is 8.5, but she has wanted fans from puppy. Always the fan for her.

I cannot imagine life without newfies, we have our four + Tessa the goldie cross and they are gentle.

I bet you miss them a lot Nina
