Spindle Cell Tumor and Lar Par

Hi Guys,

I know this should be in maladies but I'm attempting to not flip out and am stuffing it here for maximum helpful (calming) info. Elwood has been dealing with what was thankfully diagnosed as IBS which was fixed with Royal Canin Hypoallergenic food. During this process he was diagnoses with laryngeal paralysis which has gotten kinda worse in the past month or so (despite the weather being Newf perfect).

Yesterday during his checkup the Vet fund a lump about the size of a clementine on his side near his ribcage. How I didn't find it is beyond me. I'm always poking and prodding that damn dog! They took a sample and have determined it's a Spindle Cell tumor with no idea how aggressive it is, I've got the first available surgeon's appt for a consult on the 18th. It's then we will discuss the pros and cons of a) knocking out an almost ten year old Newf with b) laryngeal paralysis which adds another layer of possible trouble, and c) asking if I should have the Lar Par surgery done which may lead to d) complications due to food aspiration problems and pneumonia later.

I've only cried once, albeit hysterically, but I realize upsetting the dogs isn't going to help anything so I've calmed down. Any advice any of you might have on any of this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Michelle, Elwood, and Daisy

I found this searching for spindle cell tumors dog: http://www.vcahospitals.com/main/pet-health-information/article/animal-health/fibrosarcoma-and-spindle-cell-tumors-in-dogs/268 You may want to read the whole page. (I bolded the last two lines)

"Fibrosarcomas and spindle cell tumors originate from the connective tissue of, or beneath, the skin. The tumor is diverse in appearance and several different cell lines produce tumors of similar appearance. Some pathologists try to classify this group of tumors by their cells of origin, but this is not always possible. Therefore, these connective tissue tumors may have several different names, including fibrosarcoma, Schwannoma, neurofibroma, peripheral nerve sheath tumor, and hemangiopericytoma. Most are slow-growing. The tumors often recur locally after surgical removal but spread to other parts of the body (metastasis) is rare."

No advice to offer, but lots of prayers to send.

Oh Michelle....I'm really sorry your and Elwood are dealing with all of this. Don't freak out and google too much until you see the surgeon. Are you going for an oncology visit too? Our surgeon didn't want to do anything until he got a comprehensive plan from the oncologist.

You're not too far, so if you could make it up to Boston, NEVOG is wonderful and amazing. The main office is in Waltham, but they have a satellite location in Buzzards Bay. Maybe someone there can do a phone consult if you can't. They recommended some additional tests the gave us a better indication of the path we should take.

When Maggie was diagnosed with oral melanoma, basically everything said it was fatal. We were very lucky and got much better news after all the tests.

You never know what the tests will show, so don't make any decisions until you have all the information.

Hugs to you and Elwood!

Some tumours are fed by sugars which with ibs does complicate things.

Google cv247, budwig protocol and cancer diets which are high protein and fats but zero carbs.

read a book by dr damien dressler who is known as the cancer vet.

There is apocaps and k9 immunity plus supplements.also essiac tea.

Fingers crossed its a fairly benign one.

Rocky had a spindle cell tumor removed from his chest area in late August. We took him to a specialist in September to make sure we were on the right track with treatment. Her words upon entering the room were "If you are a dog and you are going to get cancer, this is one of the best ones to get." She did offer the option of doing more surgery to get even wider margins. We have decided to wait and monitor him. Hoping it is very slow growing and doesn't presents more problems. Good luck and keep us posted.

What?!? Not Elwood!!!

I'm so bummed to see this, but I guess it's *good* that it's a spindle cell since they seem to be so slow going. I think the LP can be managed fairly well since it's (sadly) common around here and others have a lot of helpful tips.

I don't have any tips but can offer all the hugs and newf kisses Elvis is capable of sending your way!!

No words of advice on the tumor but I know Liisa with Cooper and Khabo have gone to NEVOG and have great things to say about it. I know she's on Facebook more than here.

My Chance had LP, diagnosed around 11 years old. He had heart issues too so we couldn't do any surgery. There's some great groups on Yahoo, lots of info and support. I know there's lots of info in the LP stickie in the Maladies section too.

Sending prayers for your sweet boy.

Oh no! Elwood! That stinks. But, as was stated earlier, it sounds like this could be far worse. Like many others, I don't have any advice. But I do send :hugs:
