Have any of you had this happen to you??
You meet up with someone and they say oh what a beautiful puppy what kind is it??
You tell them oh a Newfoundland and they say OH my you do know that she is going to be a really big dog don't you??
And you think to yourself "ya like Duh that is why I chose this breed the bigger the better"
Then they say oh and they drool a lot....did they not think we were smart enough to research this before we looked for a breeder? I for one waited YEARS before I finally got this dog.
LOL
Then when they find out Bailey is only about 51/2 months old and she is 66lbs they exclaim again that she is going to be huge and wonder if we realize this and in Bailey's case they wonder why she is not black because Newfoundlands are usually black not brown they wonder if she is a Saint instead!!!

I like the ones that argue with you and tell you that that isn't a Newf for whatever reason, like you don't know what your own dog is. I find most people don't know enough about the breed to 'inform' me of their issues.:!rolling: I do get asked a lot if they shed, and I always say "only about 12 months out of the year". You'd be surprised how many people say seriously, Oh that's not too bad!:slap:

All the time!!! Tess is already big and they've already made the statement that she's huge and then say......"you do know that she's gonna be a big dog". I also get the questions regarding how much she eats, how big my backyard is and how much she drools.

I HATE it when people do this! Unfortunately, murder is illegal where I live. I especially like the ones who think that my Landseer, Zeus, is a Saint Bernard. When I tell them that he is a Newf, they say "well, I RAISED St. Bernards!" I respond to this comment by saying "well, then you know that a ST. Bernard is a white and BROWN dog." This usually makes them storm away, muttering to themselves.

As far as the shedding issue, most people seem satisfied when I tell them that "I had to buy a special vacuum cleaner (my Dyson animal)"

I get this all the time too. First they ask what kind of mix she is. When I tell them that she's a Newfoundland, they always say, "Oh really, I thought Newfoundlands were black, and isn't she too small to be a Newfoundland. Maybe she has some border collie in her?" I always tell them she's a female Landseer, 100 lbs., not completely filled out yet. Fits right to the standard. Go look it up. They usually just say oh, and look at me like I don't know what I'm talking about.

I had business cards made for Nanook when he passed his therapy dog test - on the front is his picture, his email address, his web address - on the back is a list of responses to the most common questions people ask us; most especially:

"Nanook is a Landseer Newfoundland. Yes they DO come in more than just black. Honest."

Closely related... there used to be a pet shop in our local mall, and one time they had a couple of newfie puppies...one black and the other a Landseer. I asked to see the Landseer, and the sales girl told me that it was a Landseer, and that it was a SEPARATE BREED from the Newfoundland!! Playing the dummy, I asked her if she was sure about that, because I was pretty sure they were the same breed, just different colors/markings. She very knowledgeably pulled one of those "This is the _______" crappy breed books off the spinner rack, and sure enough, it had Newfies and Landseers listed as totally separate breeds!!! I didn't have the heart to burst her bubble LOL

With Jack, the first question is always 'what is he'. My favorite second question is 'do you allow him in the house?'. My new comback for thist is, 'sure, why not? I weigh more than him and I'm allowed in the house'

Another common question regarding Jack is 'is he a st. bernard'. Well one day while walking on the bike trail, I passed a woman walking a saint. We stopped and chatted for a couple minutes and I said, you know, when most people see Jack they think he is a Saint. And she laughed and said, most people see my saint and ask if it is a Berner. I got a real kick out of that!

everyone around here knows my newf so I dont get the silly questions
about the newf. but then there are the pyrs. what are they? are they white newfs? is Molly (newf) their mum? what did you breed the newf with to get those? oh well, another few months and the whole town will know these two pups and then no more questions about them either

In Europe Landseers are considered a separate breed. They're called the European Continental Type or similar, an ECT Landseer...they are considered a separate breed because of their different body type, and higher energy level. They ARE different from what we consider Landseer Newfoundlands - you can click this link to see a side by side comparison of a Landseer Newf and an ECT Landseer:

http://www.moloss.com/breeds/jkl/l001/landsee.jpg

They are recognized as a separate breed in Europe and by the F.C.I. According to DogBreedInfo.com

"The origin of the Landseer stems back to Germany and Switzerland. In the USA and Great Brittan the Landseer is considered the same breed as the Newfoundland, however in some European countries the Landseer is a totally different breed than the Newfoundland. Landseers in Europe have longer legs than newfies, Landseers are not so massive, they are more sporty dogs. In shows, they compete separately."

Tug

One of the people I work with came in and said: "YOu think TUG is big, you should have seen this big, black BEAR of a dog I saw yesterday! It was HUGE! Must have outweighed Tug by 50 pounds!"
I smiled, brought up a picture of a Newf on the computer, and asked: "Like this?"
"Yeah! Yeah, that's it!"
Laughing, I said: "Well, there's a lot of that IN Tug!"
"Oh... He's going to get BIGGER?"
Another laugh: "Uh, yeah... He's only 16 months old; they grow for the first 2 years, at LEAST!"
"Oh... OH! Did you KNOW he was going to be that big..."
And the rest you know.

We took Zeke and Abbey to the local Petco and a woman actually came up to us and said" What a beautiful Landseer". I was floored. First time anyone even knew they were Newfs.

I was once asked if Floyd and Neptune were the same breed. Seriously, I kid you not. :icon_stupid:

:roflmao:Really. The same breed. I couldn't believe it. :roflmao:

Since we usually have a dog at our store we get the usual list of questions from new customers.......what is it? why does it have white on it? why doesn't it weigh 250 lbs like the one their friend had? does it do anything other than just lay there? do we let it in the house? really, we let it in the house? do they drool? do they shed? do they eat a lot? how much do they cost (I hate that question)? you have how many?? are you insane? and so on.....

Non-Newf, but kind of related...... The other day I had a customer who insisted that her new cat was a cat/rabbit cross. Sigh. The vet even told her so.....(yes, THAT vet, the one I refuse to go to.) I pointed out that cats and rabbits were different species and probably not able to mate...but apparently they read on the internet that their chromosomes are close enough that they can. I mean, it was written on the internet, so it must be true...right... I think any sensible argument would have been lost on her....

oh yes I can see how much Floyd looks like the newfs. even his color is newf color!!
people can be soooooooo silly

Brody the Newf

New member
We've started saying that Brody is 180 pounds and is considered small for a Newf. That gives someone enough rope to hang themselves when they come back with a reply that their friend's/neighbors Newfie is at LEAST twice the size of Brody. I've also admited that Brody's breeder fooled me by hiding a ST. Bernard Puppy in the litter.

I also love it when people assume that my dog must be friendly. Parents smile when their kids come up and pet my dog instead of teaching the child to ask first. I love watching facial expressions when I say "Careful he bites".
