So Hank is back on the prednisone

Well crap. Hank got another cbc done today and since two weeks ago his red blood cell count has dropped 5%. He has been acting a little slower thats why I took him in for the cbc. So he has to go back on the prednisone at a lower dosage than before. The doctor said we can wean him off of it again in 2-3 months, but if his counts can't stay up then he will have to be on the prednisone for the rest of his life. Which sucks because of all the results I have read about long term prednisone use.

Thankfully the low dose of prednisone is working and doing it's thing, so in 3 months we will try and wean him off again and see what happens.

What about sending his history and test results to Dr Dodds in California? There might be more going on here that another set of eyes wouldn't hurt.

awww...:hugs:to you and your puppy...I've been on that junk myself for my asthma...it was a wild ride, it did not mix with my body well at all. We were into full out meltdowns and tantrums over spilled milk (literally). I thought I was loosing my mind. It was the longest 6 weeks of my life. It was all I could make it thought a day without snapping or bursting into tears, but it all came out once I got home. It was wild, and that's not something you can just stop taking.

I just recently lowered (under careful vet directions) my dog from 40 milligrams a day to 20 milligrams a day. Wednesday she goes down to just 10 per day. She's already lost most of the symptoms of using the drug. Even if poor Hank has to be on for extended period he's going to be just fine I'm sure.

Sorry to hear this. A low dose of pred is not all bad. Samantha is now 12 and she has been on a low dose since she was 4. I have cbc/profile done each year and so far she is fine. She no longer show the usual side effects of thirst and frequent urination. Now I do think a 2nd opinion is always a good idea.
