Sammy Condition Deteriorating - going to Davis

Yesterday Sammy collapsed - could not get up. (yesterday was his 1st Birthday!!) Is walking sideways - left leg now the one he can't seem to stand on. Attacked Delilah for first time when she interfered with my brushing him out. Not good.

I used a sling to help him around. He urinated in our bathrom this morning.

Good news is that after consulting with my vets, I made the decision to drive him to UC Davis (3 hours -not too bad) for diagnostics and whatever else he needs. I didn't want to be taking him to 10 different doctors. UC has all the latest equipment and their nursing care is exemplary. They do TPLO if necessary and have a Penhip certified doctor. They also can do an MRI if necessary. I feel relieved. This is the answer I was looking for.

I feel blessed that I am within 3 hours of perhaps the #1 veterinary school in the country.

I will post an update of the diagnosis on Monday evening. I assume that if he needs surgery they will keep him. I fear that Sammy now needs surgery on both legs.

Good for you to get him to UC Davis. I have heard nothing but good things of them, so Sammy will be in good hands. I'm sorry he's doing so poorly, and rest assured his outburst at Delilah, and the pottying on the floor is more than likely from the pain. He's feeling pretty vulnerable right now, so hang in there.

Hi Sharon- I agree, UC Davis is a great facility for vet care but I did notice one thing... it is a teaching facility and if you want one of the senior staff members (the more experienced people) you have to book an appointment way in advance. Although they did assure me that all work is supervised and the senior members do take a peek and consult when asked (I'm assuming that vet school is like med school concerning residents). Maybe when I went, they were just super busy??? Prayers that Sammy will be OK!
