Restless nights

Anyone else have a restless newf at night? Quinn is 6 months old and is awake almost every night from about 11 or so to about 2 or so. He sighs and whines, flips and flops..just can't seem to get comfortable. He's not crated, has a couple of options for beds...but of course just wants to sleep on the cold floor anyway.

I think it's related to heat. I'm in the northeast of NY state...we're just starting to warm to the 30's this time of year. So, the heat is on, though we live in a 1800's house so it is drafty and there are a couple of areas where the heat doesn't carry as well. Our room is one of them but he seems to resist sleeping there in favor of the spot next to the front door. I hear him flipping and flopping all night..and walking around looking for a comfy spot.

He is appropriately exercised(not too much, not too little) fed and watered. Not sure what else we can do to relax him at night.

Any suggestions?

Katy, she does the same...........I used to worry, but now i just get up some night to let her out for a potty break. She makes all sort of noises. Whimpers, howls, little barks and sometimes she just roams.
Don't concern yourself....Several of our pups have done it. Abbey and Tessa (not a newf) were terrible. My only concern is making sure I do not miss any potty break requirements. but she will ring the bells for those or bark right next to my ear

Yep, sounds familiar. Obie got me up at 2 this morning.. I thought it was to go out to take care of some urgent need. Nope, quick pee, then he sprawled out belly up enjoying the cold and damp grass. He was simply hot. Seems the hubby left the heat on and it had gotten to a "stifling" 65 degrees inside. So, I just lured him back in, turned off the heat, turned on the fan and he was soon snoring. I hate to break it to him that summer will be here soon in New Orleans and no air conditioner on the planet will keep my hundred year old house under 65 degrees! So.. try a fan and a little ice in the water bowl and see if it helps.

I've tried the fan trick too. If he's this hot in the winter, I have no idea how summer is going to go for him. We do have central A/C. and a pool in the backyard.

Yep, River would wake up several times per night up until 2 weeks ago. She wanted to just go lay in the snow. I finally figured out that 63 degrees at night is too hot. It goes down to 58 now and we all sleep better. My electricity bill is going to be giant this summer.

Sounds like youre suspicions are right. He's probably too hot. We keep the heat at 60 F all the time, but we do have a woodstove in the FR (with a door to keep the heat in there), and we have some excellent heaters (Eden Pure) in the computer room and bedroom when we're there watching TV or whatever. Once we're out of the room...the heaters are off.

Cole and Molly prefer being in the hall/DR/laundry room because it's cool there. However, they really prefer being outside. I don't let them stay out all night, but they can stay out until we go to bed.

I don't know if you've heard of these heaters, but they use almost zero energy, don't dry the air, yet heat beautifully. If you do consider getting one... get the large one (heats up to 1000 sq feet). You can turn the large one down in a smaller area, but you can't put the small one in a large space and turn it up.

Poseidon loves the house, but not to sleep in. He will come on our bed for quiet down and then would rather sleep in our sunroom on the cold tile. He never liked the crate. Athena and Aurora still sleep in our master bath on the tile. I take them out around 11:00 p.m. and they don't wake me until 6:30-7:00 a.m. Poseidon doesn't wake to go out until he hears the others waking.

Chance always slept better when he had his fan blowing on him. It was funny how he would move around till he got the breeze just where he wanted it!

Donna, I have one of those heaters and love it!! Maggie seems to do ok with the heat staying around 65-68 but it accidentally got to 70 once and she acted like we were on the surface of the sun.

Normally, once the lights go out I dont' hear a peep from her all night. Last night however she had me up at 4:37am, 5:25am and wanted to go out again around 6am. Must've been some Newfie thing going on last night.

My three daughters are cold wimps...and I have a special needs son who has difficulties regulating his body temps. There's no way I could keep this house at 60 or so. I've been letting him stay out for as long as he wants before we go to bed for the night. Last night I didn't hear him at all, so maybe it helped.

Tiki acts the same way, the other 2 guys slep like logs next too & on the bed by us, Tiki moves around between the 1st floor entry & next to me on the floor; we keep our house about 64 degrees in winter & 74 to 76 in the summer (AC). I think its a puppy thing, growing pains.

Sully is also like this, some nights I can hear him moving around restlessly in his crate. I can also hear him make some whimpers or groans here and there, and occassionally I would hear him wake up panting. I assumed he was hot. We now sleep with the window open, (I like sleeping in cool temperatures as I also hate being hot when i sleep) and we both are sleeping much better. I can still hear him shift once in awhile, but not like he used too. He normally sleeps from 11pm - 6:45am. Rarely wakes me up in the night to go out. I too feel bad for him once Summer comes...

PS. will he ever start sleeping in past 6:45am? I would like to sleep a bit later on the weekends :) But it is like his body is programmed, and he just KNOWS, hey, it's 6:45am, let me out for a poop and feed me!!

yes we had the same problem with Hagrid. He gets so hot in one position. We have a very old house with no insulation on the floors because we are too close to the ground and he loves to sleep on the cold entryway right in front of the front door. Our front door has a crack in it and cold air blows from the lower part so he's happy! Also in order to get sleep we wear warm hats at night now and we don't even turn on the heater anymore. the things we do for our animals! Right now Hagrid's sleeping at my feet, its 52* and my window is open. He's snoring. love him. Lily

Maneen seems to get this way at the change of the seasons or during a full moon. No I'm not joking. He had me up at 5:30 a.m. today, but it has been as early as 3 a.m. He'll got out and just lie in the yard for an hour. (this is a dog who usually hates to be out alone).

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, Emily, but mine are up before 6 every day...I don't even bother setting the alarm anymore. On weekends I pretend not to hear them...and Dave gets up...:devil3:

Yep. It's like having your own personal walking slobbery, hairy alarm clock. I have'nt slept past 6am since we got Maggie.
