Poor Emma

Last night Emma got a wicked UTI and was so distressed. We had a very sleep deprived night but my friend had some anti-biotics that the Vet said I could give her until we got her there today. Emma had surgery about two years ago for an inverted vulva that was splashing the urine bask up into the track. I think in the winter she does not drink enough water , she prefers snow. Thankfully tonight she is much better and is eating and drinking. Poor Bear did not know what was happening with going out every 5 minutes and Emma crying. Bear slept beside his sister and I think she felt very good with him close. I get so worried when my animals are in pain, they are my everything.

It happens that Moonlight has the same thing, plus a short urethra. We are part of a test group and (knock on wood) have not had a UTI is about 9 months. This may sound stupid, but here's what we do: a few times a day we used baby wipes after she's been out and we wipe her off just like cleaning a baby (she sees the wipe and throws herself on the floor, flops on her back and "relaxes"). She also gets a good belly rub. She learned this in about a day and thinks it's fun. Also, once a week I do a urine test with the same test strips used in human doctor offices. Results are recorded and faxed to the vet. Any change in the strip indicates an oncoming UTI which can be handled before it gets bad. So far, the wiping has handled everything! Who says they aren't like babies.

Do you give Emma cranberry capsules? Tiika gets two capsules a day - one with each meal. She's never ever had a UTI. My last Newf, Bonnie, used to get them, but not Tiika with the cranberry.

How sweet of Bear! I love animals for just this reason! Baby Wipes and cranberry capsules both sound like really good ideas! Prayers for Emma going out now.

I also forgot that we keep her hair trimmed as close as possible in the "offending" area (just had to do that this AM).

The Vet said we should cut the hair near the rear end. She has such a hairy fluff butt and I think the bacteria gets caught back there. I did some trimming last night and will finish tonight. I will get some cranberry for her. She is feeling much better with the anti-biotics.

Emma simply cannot catch a break! So sorry :( I'm with Nina in the behind-wiping and hair trimming club...knock on wood, it's a formula that's been working to keep the UTI's at bay after a tough first year with them.

All of mine get it, and it definately works for me.

I do the baby wipes, the trimming of the hair and the cranberry pills as well. I thought they were just a fad, but I ran out of them and two weeks later she had a UTI. Maybe it was a coincidence, but I am not taking any chances...:)

Emma is doing much better, almost finished the anti-biotics, got all her butt hair trimmed off and I will get her on the cranberry this weekend. How many capsules do I give she weighs about 135
