I got to bring Oliver to school to help with the Lewis and Clark lessons in the fourth grade. He walked into a room with about 70 kids as happy as can be. He sat by me while I showed pictures and shared information about the breed. After the slide show was done, a few kids came up at a time to pet him. He was a hit! I loved seeing him interact with all the students so lovingly. (sorry the picture quality isn't great)

this kid had just eaten lunch and I think Oliver noticed

After we left the fourth graders, we went to visit with a first grade class because the teacher is a Newfy fan. She started the day by telling them they were going to have a surprise visitor and they would get to write a book about the day. Here is the first page she shared with them

I didn't get any pictures of Oliver and the first graders but he was wonderful with them and they loved him. I was amazed that none of them showed any fear even though they were about the same size. Here are two of my favorite pages out of the book they wrote, describing things they would like to do with Oliver if he got to spend the whole day at school.

(to explain, I told the kids he likes to eat carrots)

Aww, that is so sweet! Good boy Oliver!!! I bet he would love to have a bath in the pond and sleep on the carpet.

Awwww. I am trying to get my daughter's 5th grade class to allow us to bring Darcy when they study L&C next month, but I think it's a no go! I love these photos!

What a great way to spend a day. I'll bet this is one event those children will remember forever...the day that big black dog came to school.

Thanks everyone.
One of my favorite parts of the day was the comment and question time. There were the obvious ones such as 'How much does he eat?' and 'Where does he sleep?' to the more interesting ones such as 'What does he do if you're hurt or upset?' and 'What would he do if he thought you were in danger?'. One that had me stumped for a bit was 'Is he a visiting dog?' She then clarified, 'You know the kind who visits hospitals and old people?' I had to admit that Oliver wasn't a visiting dog (yet) but that many wonderful newfs are. I also heard many 'That's the coolest dog ever.' and 'I'm totally going to get one when I'm grown up.' I also loved to hear 'He's so big but I'm not scared of him at all.' and 'I hope he licks my face when I pet him.' I was also impressed that out of four classrooms, kids were given the choice to pet the dog or not and every single one took the opportunity. It warmed my heart to see kids who have rough lives, dislike school, or have differing abilities all interact lovingly with Oliver. What a wonderful breed. Thanks for letting me share.

Oh Katie. How fun! He is such a sweetie, I am not at all surprised they all adored him! He reminds me so much of Sunshine. She was lucky enough to go to school & visit Lucy's class through 5th grade. You must be a very proud mom!

Way to go, Oliver! The look of joy on everyone's faces is priceless! I wish I could take Seamus to school with me everyday! He is such a calming force to my troubled students and they LOVE him.
