[NON-NEWF] Baby bunnies

A few days ago I finally decided to weed the area beneath our Rose of Sharon, which is located at the corner of our front yard. Our house is on a corner lot at a fairly busy intersection, so imagine my surprise when I remove a large clump of dried leaves to find a nest of bunnies underneath it! Luckily I was able to cover their nest without disturbing them.

Four days later we had a huge thunderstorm. I found the nest completely uncovered and improvised a new cover of leafy branches. This was the same storm that felled a tree-sized limb onto our garage -- I made use of some branches from that limb.

The next day, three of the bunnies had left the nest. Here are the two that remained one day longer than the others. My daughter told me that when they have a white spot on their heads it means they are ready to leave the nest. I have never heart that before, but these bunnies have the white spot.

The next day all 5 bunnies were hanging around the Rose of Sharon bush. They did not run when I approached and I was able to get very close to them. The runt of the litter seemed like it was the bravest and most curious one. At one point it walked up to me and took a leaf of clover that I offered to it. This is the curious one.

Here are some more pictures of the group.

After that day I have not seen the bunnies except for one or two of them hiding in the ivy and in some of the other bushes in our front yard. We see the mama quite frequently, so maybe they will stick around. I know a lot of people consider bunnies to be pests, but I have grown attached to them.

Those pictures and the story and experience comments..are wonderful. I am happy the improvised shelter, helped them survive..and that they have safe-space with you and yours. Here..the wild ones are on the lower fence rows and the blackberry thickets..but we do see them, in the distance off and on. :) ina n HB
