Noises dogs make when swimming

I take Scarlet to a local lake for swimming and retrieving. I noticed that when she is swimming with the toy in her mouth, she makes a slight little whimper noise with each breath. She doesn't seem to be out of breath or winded when she reaches shore and she begs to retrieve again...I was just wondering, has anyone else ever noticed their dog making a little noise like this...Thanks.

My dogs make all sorts of noises when thy swim from a whimper to snort to whistle or even a whine. Nothing to worry about.

If she is not out of breath or winded, she is fine. Benson used to make whistling noises when he swam. Glory huffs and Henry will whistle. I've noticed many different sounds coming from the other newfs that we train with and they are all excellent swimmers and in excellent shape.

That is the reason good Newf breeders keep the loose flews. Yes, it DOES cause more slobber, but who the heck cares about that in this glorious breed, unless it's folks who know absolutely nothing about them except that they look like a "wooly bear" and so comfy. Give me a break.

I actually met a guy at a dog park a few days ago with a Newf that was only 6 months old. I thought it was obviously a cross-breed, but he pointed at Boss and said "same as your dog". I, incredulously said, "your pup is a Newf??" and he went on to give me some song and dance about how his breeder in Southern MO (!! alert, puppy mill territory, but the same breeding ground my boy is from so I can't truly generalize) breeds for "no slobber, excellent hips, bones, whatever BS,... I'm talking this Newf had a collie snout!! NOT WHAT a water dog should have!! These noises in their snouts are very important to be able to carry something while still breathing in and out in the water.

Major rant here. There are REASONS we have purebreds. I also happen to be a full blooded member of our Humane Society, so we have to make room for idiots that breed their dogs as back yard breeders.

It's the yin and yang of the dog world, and I'm glad manhy folks are on both sides!

I have seen exaqmples of exactly what you are referring to. I don't know what we can do to help educate people. It seems that the ones I get a chance to speak to, already have their dog. In other words...damage done. Greedy breeder has their money, owner has their dog that does not fit the standard. At that point, I spend my energy making sure they have no intention of breeding thier dog and leave it at that. I have run into several who do intend to breed and their dog is definitley not close to the breed standard. Too bad there isn't something that can be done about that...People seem to think that just because they have AKC papers, that they have a purebreed dog.
Sarah...it's okay to rant....we all understand!

Tug makes that high pitched whine! At first i was worried that he was hurt, having problems breathing... Then I waited a minute before throwing his frisbee.
It's his "I'MSOEXCITED!!!!" sound  He whined at me, at the frisbee, at the water, waiting not so patiently for me to throw it ;)

Yup, Ayasha makes the same noise you described! At first it freaked me out. My labs never made such a sound. Sounds like it's just another trait unique to our Newfs. I'll add it to the list of their many quirks!

Kaila,

I love it when dogs get the zoomies. My guy, at age 3.5, just doesn't cut loose anymore like those young ones do. It really makes me burst out laughing, although I'm always somewhat cognizant of my knees and trying to steer clear of dogs when they are overcome with energy. It's such a delight to witness!!
