A very sad day here.. I helped Betty, my 13 year old Cardigan Welsh Corgi to the bridge this morning . Betty was a tennis ball retriever extraordinaire, Katrina survivor & blue-eyed bombshell. Since 2008 though, she has been challenged by spinal issues. But even with the loss of the use of her back legs in the spring, Betty retained her spunky nature and bright personality. Sadly, her neurological issues led to uti's with increasing frequency and then life-threatening sepsis and renal failure in December. We got her past that crisis and she was doing well with sub-q fluid therapy and dietary changes. Nevertheless, we just couldn't get ahead of the continued and increasingly resistant uti's. This morning, I saw in her face that it was time to go. She had a new infection. Her liver and kidney numbers had worsened. She'd stopped eating. And today.. exhibited signs of seizures or vestibular syndrome. Her eyes told me it was time to stop fighting. Like all of us who have struggled with this decision, I'm devastated but confident it was the right call. It is just part of our responsibility when we accept the joys and benefits of pet ownership. I'll see you on the other side sweet one!
