Newfoundland water rescue aptitude survey 2013 -

If you own or have previously owned a Newfoundland, please complete the linked survey & share. The results will yield a lot of important information on the current situation of water rescue instinct and ability within the Newfoundland population. For example: Do the majority of Newfoundlands enjoy the water? Do they know how to swim efficiently? If not, do the dogs have anything in common?

The results will also hopefully allow myself to conduct a larger project on "Conformational characteristics that play a role in creating good working Newfoundlands", conducted within the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College, UK.

It will take less than 5 minutes to complete. All answers are treated with anonymity, no personal information of the dog or you is asked. Book prizes are available for two randomly selected participants at the end of the survey (if contact information provided).

Thank you Brandie&Maggie, piecanpatty, Newfiemama, R Taft! Every single reply counts towards an accurate cut of the population :)! Please add all the dogs you have or have previously owned for me to possibly also be able to analyze how the aptitude has changed (improved, declined, no change) according the the data, not just perception. All the results will be published after analysis & posted here for you to have a very interesting read.

Are we supposed to fill this out for our non newf dogs too? Wait maybe that doesn't matter because I don't think any of my other dogs would step into water on purpose ... I did feel like such a newf newb filling this out. I couldn't get Suki to stand still so I had to find pictures of her and decide which body type she has. I even had to find pictures of her swimming to answer the question of whether her back is in or out of the water while she swims. I am super interested to see the results though!

Are other dog groups as dedicated as Newf owners? Just the time you put into this survey (creating it as well as people filling it out) shows such love people have for the breed.

Done. Couldn't fill it out on iPhone, had to wait until got home. Only thing that was difficult for me was matching body types, didn't know if I chose the right silhouette. Hope everybody who owns / has owned a Newf ever fills this out so you can get relevant results, glad you are doing this.

Thank you everyone for the responses, every single response counts :) !

You can also add other breeds if you want, but when I analyze it, I will focus mainly only on Newfoundland results, perhaps making comparisons to other breeds IF there's a lot of other data or obvious differences. So if you have time, do fill it out for your other dogs also, but I'm mainly aiming to get Newf-information :).

The body types are the five most common types I find there to be, but I won't say the differences out loud (yet) because I don't want you to be influenced by what is the "standard" and what are the differences. I know for a fact that for example from our dogs Capri is #2, Vera #3, Ruuti #1 and Merita (at the moment) #5. If you do however have trouble deciding, send me an email with a photo and I'll tell you what I think :).

Thank you Anne for your responses! Yes, please do cross post to any and all Newf owners you know :) ! The more answers we get, the better and more accurate the results'll be :)!

So maybe I will do Tessa ...Our wannabee newfie extra-ordinary...It is her that has encouraged three non-swimming newfies (rescue) to swim. And her that made Katy so confident in the water as she made it fun and safe........She leads by example and has such incredible patience with our rescue's..........
