We have a rescue dog our daughter found a year ago, her name is "Sugar" she is a sheltie/mix that went into heat last week, we had no idea she was not spayed being she's a rescue, and never has had a heat in the past.
My concern is with my beautiful landseer boy "Dirk" who just celebrated his one/year birthday, he is not neutered and has been a PURE JOY of puppy to raise, sensitive, brilliant, loving he's just the perfect puppy to me.

While "Sugar" was in heat he naturally went hormone crazy, (completely obessed with her and no interaction with us, just a one track mind) and we thought it would be best to neuter him, infact we will take him to the vet next Monday.

However I am having second thoughts, today he's my perfect boy again following me everywhere, loving on me, needing my attention and affection, and wondering if I should still get him neutered?????

Thanks a lot for you guys are the best!!!

If you still want to wait to get him neutered, couldn't you get Sugar spayed instead for now?

Unless you plan to show him, have him evaluated and do the health testing on him that should be done and then use him in a breeding program, He should be neutered. Some studies have shown that you should not neuter or spay until they are 18- 24 months and you want till then then, that is fine. You boy will go nuts anytime there is a bitch in heat around. It may not even dog you are aware of - it may live several blocks away.

In any the Sugar - the sheltie/mix should be spayed. This should be done once she is out of season.

Never spay a female who is in season.... huge rise in complications, blood clots, and death. Spay her after.

She will only be in season for a couple weeks, so maybe just keep him or her penned up during that time.

I agree with the others...wait till he is at least 18 months to neuter.

Due to some huge and difficult circumstances with Annabelle (newf) we did get her spayed whilst in season. And with a good Surgeon, we had no issues at all. We discussed the risks. And there are meds that can prevent some of the things that could possibly happen. I would wait with the young male newf till a little older............As per most studies done.
Maybe there is somewhere the little rescue could stay fo a short time? If you do not want tto spay her as yet.

Just make sure to keep them apart ALWAYS, you don't want any newf/sheltie ??? mixes.

We Did, I would wait until he is at least 2. The growth plates are closed, and he has gotten all of the benifit of those hormones.

Regardless of what you decide to do with the male, the female should be spayed as soon as she gets out of heat. It's best for her all around, and so much simpler for you.

Thanks guys for your input, I knew I would get the answers we needed to make the proper decisions, Many Thanks!!!

"Dirk" WILL NOT be neutered, we will wait until he's finished growing, and or do as "BluwatersNewfs" suggested. I honestly hated the idea of not breeding him, (that is ONLY if the PERFECT opportunity arised, and ALL health checks were cleared) he truly has the greatest disposition and intelligence it would be unfortunate.

Yes "Sugar" is going to the vet to determine what we should do since things have gotten complicated with the neighbors dog hanging around, not sure if he got to her while she was going potty (some people here let their dogs run a muck since it's in the country, it drives me crazy).

Thanks again, have a great day !:kgo_027:

I vote wait as well.
Be certain you are fixing him for all the right reasons.
I would hate to see you place the girl, and then re-think the decision you made.

When my Lab was in heat we gave her chlorophyl tablets. The tablets mask the scent. We had her going through dog trainging and none of the other dogs even knew that she was in heat. Good luck to you.

I spay and neuter ALL dogs that aren't shown in conformation rings. It's critical to make sure we don't add to the canine population without well researched breeding considerations.

Confession time ~ I never heard you were supposed to wait until two!! We had Elvis neutered last fall when he was only 7 months! He's grown up just fine, but could we have royally screwed him over? His vet never said anything.....his breeder never mentioned anything.....we're still so new to newfnet and i didn't see anything in any newf book. Is this really common knowledge, something you're definately supposed to wait on, or just a general recommendation?

I just want to be clear - I not only said they he should havehis health checks but should be evaluated as whether he should be bred and shown. Temperment and intelligence are not the only qualities that should be looked in deciding on breeding a particular dog.

Don't feel guilty. easily said because I do.. Many of us had our newfs neutered early before we got educated. I know I have kicked myself in the behind more times that I care to count. I will always wonder if that had something to do with Murphy's wonky legs, though his littermate Ozzy was also neutered at the same time and he is fine.

Buddy was fixed at 7 or 8 months, because in the contract from the SPCA we had to or they could take him back. Knowing what I know now I would have waited, but it won't absolutely harm your dog to do it sooner, most people seem to prefer to eer on the side of caution, which I will definately do next time when given a choice.

FYI...on me, and neutering our "Dirk"

I do stand corrected, ..... I have no idea what I am talking about concerning "breeding" our Dirk. I have never done such a thing, and if anything I will consult help from expert AKC club member(s) if......and that is a BIG IF if it should occur!!!

(Please understand this will probably NEVER EVER HAPPEN, but we have been approached by experienced people in the dog world that he is a special dog.)

We enjoy our pet as family members and NOT for reproducing unwanted baby puppies for selfish reasons!!!!

I have ALWAYS spayed/neutered our pups at 3-6 months of age, whether it is a homeless animal as "Sugar" that we found and kept, or it is a homeless dog/cat that we found and placed into a new home.

I've been an active member with the largest pug rescue in the US for many years, the last pug I rescued was 12 years old, blind and crippled from abuse, he was our son, we were able to give him 4 yrs of living life like a "King". He was 16 yrs old when left us, the dog someone threw away like garbage was one of the most precious pets in our lives !!!

Just wanted to give you a little back ground on me and my to commiment animals !!!

Have a great day!!!
