Need help in choosing a Dyson! *Please*

Our current vacuum died and will cost more than its worth to replace. After talking to my future breeder and reading the many comments by NN'ers we have decided to go with the Dyson Animal, but I cant figure out if we should go with the DC 25 "Animal HEPA Bagless Upright Vacuum - Iron/Satin Purple"l which is the model with the "ball" or the DC-17 "Dyson - Animal HEPA Upright Bagless Vacuum - Titanium/Purple". These are the only two models available locally, so I really only am considering these two models.

There are a number of differences which are highlighted below, but I really cannot figure out which is better for us. With 6 cats and at least 1 or 2 future shaggy dogs in a house with both hardwood and some carpet, does anyone have any advice on which to get? They are the same price.

Good choice in vacuum. We have owned 2 Dyson vacuum cleaners...one didn't get shipped when we moved to Germany...so we bought another one here. We never bought the Animal version but they are all pretty much the same. As far as the difference, either would be great. I know...not much help. If you have a lot of tight spaces, I would imagine the ball one would help out.

We have had two dyson animals over the last few years the first died in a very short time and it was replaced with the same model and fingers crossed it is still going well so i am informed, the only fault is that the brushes do become blocked with hair which requires cutting out.we have 5 newfs so it is used every day.

I have a Dyson animal.. but if i was going to get another Dyson it would be the Dyson Ball for sure. My dyson is very good but it is heavy to move around.. the ball on the other hand moves easy and around corners with ease. One thing to remember Newf hair will get caught on any beater bar so u must clean the bar almost every time u use it unless u first pick up the hair by another means.. i use a rubber broom that beauty parlors use to sweep hair.. i use it on the floors and rugs just so i don\t have to clean that bar so often.

The one thing that worries me about the ball is that there are no attachments really for it. But it does seem much lighter and easy to maneuver. It also has an edge vacuum, but it does have over 8% less power, a shorter cord, and less canister volume.

The lack of attachments is annoying my wife, but I know she hates our current extremely heavy vacuum.

I use the wand to pick up any poofs of hair first. Just aim the wand at the poof and suck it up. Keeps most of it off my beater bar. (I don't have carpeting)

I also use it for poofs UNDER furniture.

My favorite attachment doesn't come with the vacuum anyway. It's for flat surfaces, like walls, etc. We have wood beams and it's PERFECT for those.

You can always buy attachments. I don't use the mini turbine upholstery one often...I have leather where the dogs are, and don't need a turbine one anyway...a flat regular fabric attachment is just fine.

The flat one that attaches to the wand...for under beds, etc. is handy tho.

One little note....even though it says to wash the filter (the one under the canister) every six months, don't unless you HAVE to. Mine was working just fine...until I washed it. After that, it gets clogged all the time. I could go weeks without ever "shaking" it out before I washed it. Now I have to stop in the middle of vacuuming our large FR and clean it off/shake the dirt out. And, I always clean it BEFORE I start. I just ordered a new one.

I have 9 dogs in my house, and we use a shop vac. We found it worked better than household vacuum.. I have both carpet and Wilsonite (like Pergo) floors though out my house.

i HAVEN'T BEEN SO IMPRESSED WITH THE NEW DYSONS I HAVE THE ANIMAL AND THE AUTO CLUTCH KEEPS PLAYING UP ON IT. IT HAS BEEN REFURBISHED TWICE . I USED TO LOVE THE 01,07 MODELS BUT THIS ONE IS A NUISANCE SO I HAVE TO KEEP TWO HOOVERS IN THE HOUSE NOW JUST IN CASE. IF I WAS GOING TO GO FOR ONE IT WOULD BE THE ONE WITH THE BALL FOR EASY MANOUVERING

DC-17 has a longer cord and more amps, wider cleaning path and more attachments. This is the model we've been using for several years, on a twice-a-day basis.

even though it says to wash the filter (the one under the canister) every six months, don't unless you HAVE to.
I just replace the filter every 6 months. You can buy them at Walmart, Sears, and most other stores that sell vacuums.

I have the animal...and I also bought a kirby Sentria. The Kirby is absolutely amazing and is very, very solid piece of equipment. The dyson doesnt even get used...it just doesnt come anywhere close to standing up with the kirby (the suction power of the kirby is unbelievable).

We have the DC-17. I absolutely LOVE it. The attachments are awesome, especially the one for furniture. With a white cat, that is a must!! I tested how well it works by vacuuming with my parents fairly new, pretty good quality vacuum then using the DC-17 after. It SITLL picked up so much hair etc. I couldn't believe it. I love the bare floor setting (since we have no carpet, just area rugs). I have no trouble moving it around, and if you pick it up by the handle (correct centre of gravity) it is easy to lift. I am very happy with it.

I have the 17 too and do not find it hard to move around. You do have to clean the brushes frequently but that's the only issue with it. Had mine about 3 years now, no problems. The one problem I did have was my fault (didn't get the brushes seated properly after cleaning) customer service was able to tell me what to do very quickly. Love it.

Shop Vac user here too with 4 cats and 2 dogs. Very little carpet here (thankfully!), but the shop vac beats anything when it comes to the hard floors! Cat litter is my biggest challenge, but the shop vac handles it effortlessly!
I can use the shop vac on the throw rugs with no problems and the canister rarely needs to be emptied since it is so big! No beater bar to clean and much less money needed to buy one!
