NCA & OFA are working together on this health survey... and its CRITICAL to have as much info on as many dogs as possible to get a good picture of where the health research $$ need to be focused.

http://www.offa.org/surveys/survey_newfoundland.html

This is for ALL people (not just breeders) and ALL Newfs from ALL countries.

Some people have had some minor difficulty finding certain health conditions listed, mainly because you have to go to one screen first (like kidney disorders) to get to a list of problems (like kidney stones, urinary incontinence, ectopic ureter, etc) Bloat with torsion would be found under Gastrointestinal disorders. "newfie neck" or cervical neck pain is under neurological disorders. If you cannot find something, please send me an email at councilcup@gmail.com and I'll try to help you.

The results are open to anyone... there is a link on the same page to either enter a dog or see results, and they are updated continuously as each survey is added. Please take a minute to take a look at those results... its quite fascinating.. over 800 dogs entered so far so the numbers are starting to have a little more value. Some are shocking to me... didn't realize how many Newfs have been diagnosed with bone cancer (osteosarcoma). The percentage is way higher than I expected. Cruciate numbers are lower than I expected. Chronic ear infections are through the roof, as are allergies.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FILL OUT THE SURVEY FOR EACH OF YOUR DOGS. YOU WILL BE PROVIDING CRITICAL INFO TO SHOW THE PEOPLE CONTROLLING SOME OFTHE RESEARCH DOLLARS WHAT THE TRUE PICTURE IS OF NEWFIE HEALTH AND WHERE THEY NEED TO FOCUS OUR $$$ RESOURCES.

Wow. We knew we were lucky with Elvis (he's 3 and so far only has allergies) but being able to take that so quickly and answer "No" to most questions really made me thankful this morning.

I also liked seeing that of over 800 dogs only 5 had come from a pet store.

Patti, is this a NEW survey or the old one. I know I added some of my dogs on the old survey. Is there a way to tell which ones have been listed. I don't want to skew this thing by repeating info.

Copied this from MLZ's post on FB:

Just to stir your competitive juices a bit - currently we have 946 responses on the health survey - the Boston Terriers have 1016 - that's only 70 more surveys and we will have more than the 20th most popular breed (Newfs rank 44th) Let's see if we can leave the terriers in the dust by the weekend - please share!

Done. It takes a little while, but it certainly seems well worth it. Thank you for posting this.

This is a totally new survey - the survey done in 2010 was a "priorities" survey to get a snapshot - each person filled out the survey once and listed all of their dogs - this gave great information which is what was used to build the current survey - the new survey now available is a scientifically designed survey which if there are enough responses will give us a statistically significant picture of disease and affected rates in the breed. This survey is completed once for each dog and links the responses to individual dogs as opposed to owner completion. The information gathered builds on the info from last years survey.
