Name game!

Hello,
I can tell you my name, Cathy but I can't tell you the name of my newf: our family has been unable to settle on a suitable name for our newf pup and we'd like your suggestions, please!

Blue boy, as he is known for the moment, is the biggest black boy of the litter topping the charts at 4lbs 1 oz on day 13. He does have a small flash of white on his chest and two white toes. We were able to visit him today for the first time.

Our family lives in Ontario, Canada and this will be our first newf.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Cathy.

Everyone will tell you that they (the puppies) pick their own names. I guess their personality is a major factor. But another way is to talk to your breeder. Does he/she have a theme for this litter? Or does she designate each litter with a letter of the alphabet? Or does the kennel name suggest anything? Can she describe the pup's personality to you? Is he quiet or mischievous? Do you want a descriptive name or a human one? Lots to think about.

I keep a list of names that come to mind on occasion, so you may want to jot down some of the things that strike you.

I'm dying to see a dog named Badger. We're waiting for our first newf, too. I made a (fairly long) list of names for my boyfriend and daughter to choose from. They promptly disregarded it in favor of something else, and now we have a name chosen! :)

It will be much easier to name the pup after he gets home and you have spent some time with him.
Before I got my Sophie I had named her Mia. For WEEKS she was Mia. Then I finally got to go pick her up...and the second her breeder placed her in my arms I knew she was NOT a "Mia"!
We "tried on" several different names over the next two or three weeks. Then I tried Sophie and it stuck. It was perfect. She liked it too and woofed and wagged when I called her by her new name.
So I guess the point I am trying to get to is...don't stress and don't rush into it. The right name will happen.
There are some really creative and interesting named newfs on here. By reading through some of the forums you can get some ideas and inspiration.

Thanks, everyone. I hope I have this photo posting thing right.

It is reassuring to know we aren't the only ones to take a bit longer hitting on the right name. Our breeder made some general suggestions and friends have made more specific suggestions but nothing feels right yet.

I really like mythological names too. Bri is short for Brigantia, though in the future I think I'll stick to shorter names...

They do end up picking their own though, the name you think you will give them may not be The One at all!

He's a very precious little boy, welcome from Washington state, we're excited to get to know you and your lil guy! :)

Good luck! Naming can be either very hard or (like it was for us) very easy. Once we decided on a newf I just knew that if we got an all black one his name was going to be Elvis. My husband had no objection - he picked the breed after all - and thank goodness "Elvis" just fit him perfectly. He's got the size, floof, and personality to back up a King-sized name. Sure, it's not an original name by any means, but we didn't care.

Don't stress too much about a name before he comes home. When you find the right one, you'll know. My best advice is to think about how you'll feel yelling that name out in public. There's a dog named Chris in my neighborhood and at least three men named that too. No one knows if the dog or husband is supposed to come running!

To piggyback off this: Loki's name was originally going to be Odin, but I mentioned it to my mom and she said, "Oh, can't wait to meet little Odie!"

Odie is the dog from Garfield...I shifted to Loki, met the little guy, and from Day 1 it was perfect.

Congratulations! I was one who had the name picked before the puppy was conceived. My struggle was with how to spell it. The name was Anya.

I agree you should wait until the puppy is home with you. I usually have a list that my family created and work from that. Movie references, mythology, and Gaelic names are popular in my family. Also favorite book characters but whatever you choose definitely make sure everyone in the family is comfortable yelling it out loud outside.

Good luck!

Welcome to little what's-his-name....:kgo_057: Don't worry, the name will come as you get to know him. Our Traveler has a white chest blaze and white hind toes too and is from Ontario. Maybe they're related somehow. Whatever, we can't wait to meet him. Congratulations.

We were trying to find a name when our pup was laying on the floor and a big, black cricket hopped in the door and crawled into her fur. With a bit of unique spelling she is now Crycket.
