Four months ago I bought a Newfie puppy from a breeder in Texas and when the puppy fur grew out the adult coat was short. She looks like a flat coat retriever to most people and she doesn't look like our other newfies I have had at the same age. Was this a poor breeding combination or did someone jump the fence and the breeders pass her off as pedigreed? We will love her and keep her the rest of her life but she will be spade in the next few months even though we have full registration.

My Chase did the same thing. Don't worry the adult coat will come in usually by age 2-3. Chase didn't get her full coat until she was about 4.

Some Newf pups have short coats at that age. It will fill in. SHe is very cute and looks all Newfy and normal to me. Would love to see bigger photos

Agree with everyone else. I'd imagine that short coat is a lot easier to deal with in the Texas heat, also! So expect more fur to take a bit - sometimes they don't get their adult coat until they're actually adults, at age 3.

Be careful not to have her spayed too young - it can lead to urinary continence problems - especially in the girls. It's better to wait until she's about a year old, and not have constant urine leaking!

Thanks everyone, in the past I had no problem posting pictures to this board but this time it seems all my files are too big to upload. Same camera and I still use photo bucket but if the file size shrinks so does the picture. When I get this problem solved I will post better pictures.

Try using flickr for resizing. When you upload a picture, it gives you several size options and urls to post on websites. It's free for a certain number of pictures a month, so you could just start an account for posting newf pictures!

I think what you are doing is clicking the attachment icon, (the paperclip), above the body of your post, here on newf.net, right? If you are uploading them to photobucket, you don't have to use the attachment icon! All you have to do is cut and paste the IMG link on photobucket next to the picture, and cut and paste that link into the body of your post on Newf.net.

the link will look like this:

I added a space between the [ and the /img] so that you would see the link - otherwise it would just show up in the body of the post as the photograph, like this:

Thanks for sharing the bigger photos Joe :)

Yep, She is just young. Like everyone else says it can take 2-3 yrs for adult coats to come in. Some are REALLY fluffy at this age, some are not. She will probably end up with a coat more like your Landseer's as an adult. There is a huge range in Newf coats.

My Sophie's coat was very red and very short just a couple weeks ago at the Colorado Newf get together and even in my profile photo. I can't believe how much it has changed in the last couple weeks. So much more fur and thicker, it is also getting so black now. It looks like her dam's coat did at her age.

Also as Nessa mentioned in her post, be sure not to spay too early. Female Newfs should not be spayed until after their first heat .

You can also look through hundreds of other puppy photos on this forum and see that lots of puppies look very much like your girl at this age. Some have more fur, some have less.
Here is my Lola around your girls age. You can see she had very little fur, but now it is growing in thick, long and gorgeous, although in the new photos it still looks short since she was just spayed so she has none hanging under her, but she still has a way to go since she is only 17 months

Your little girl looks a lot like my Sophie did when she was young. She looked like a flattie until she was almost three years old.....She will be five in the fall (!) and finally has a coat like a newf, though it's still kind of short and thin in places.......

she does look all newf, tux has the same type coat though and hes a newf/retriever cross, it will be interesting to see what his coat looks like once he is full grown
