Moose Won't Take Supplements

I've run into a little problem...my Newf is smarter than me! I tried hiding his supplements (pill form) in hot dogs. No go. He holds the hot dog in his mouth until I'm not looking, and then spits it out and eats around the pill.

How do you give your dog supplements? I need some new tricks.

Smother the pill in peanut butter. I mean, completely cover it in peanut butter, then bury it under some kibble. Works at our house :D

I put ours in a strawberry...right down the center...they don't see it and usually just eat the thing whole.

I just put it down the throat and then give a piece of bread, cheese or something afterwards.

I slide through some cream cheese...or just put down their throats with a follow up of some bread or something, like Bettina. :)

Whatever I have that's mushy - butter, cream cheese, peanut butter, cheese...sometimes wrap it up in a piece of ham or turkey. Sometimes I just toss it in with their food, but before Cooper was neutered he could pick out the tiniest bit of pill and leave it in his dish! So with him I used to toss it down his throat and then give him a treat. Seriously, have you LOOKED down Moose's throat? It's not like you're going to choke him, you could probably fit your whole hand down there. LOL. ;)

Some things taste worse than others - Tramadol, for instance, needs to be very well hidden in something that tastes good, whereas the Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplement is happily swallowed along with the kibble.

Maggie takes her gluc/chon supplement along with her kibble. Same with fish oil. For anything else, i make a peanut butter sandwich. A piece of soft bread with peanut butter, pill on top, fold over bread and smoosh together really well. Works every time.

Elvis eats anything, so we just toss them in his breakfast/dinner and he doesn't seem to notice. For pills during the day we either wrap them in cheese, stick them in a green bean, coat in peanut butter, or in a spoonful of ice cream. Anything really yummy that they'll swallow without thinking about it should work!

Owain gets his fish oil, glucosamine and Vit C in his breakfast kibble and doesn't notice they are there, I'm sure!!

Snuffles takes fish oil and Vit E in his food...most of the time. I use to use things like peanut butter cream cheese, slices of cheese etc on the pill. He got to the point of spitting the pill out or you will see it slide out his flute. Sometimes I think he takes a pill and I find it stuck to his chest fur, or on a towel/floor.

Anymore I just open his mouth, stick it in the back of his throat and then give him a follow up treat like a a part of half slice of American cheese between pills in the PM and a bite of fruit in the AM.

Does he know the difference between American and ....say, Canadian cheese Leonard?

Gosh, I have no idea, but you raised a great question. You just don't find Canadian Cheese here in central Illinois. Send us some, and I will let you know. I just hope it is as cheap. :)

Hahah you guys are too funny...

Well, the obvious worked: put the pills in his food last night and he ate all but one. At least there's some way he'll take them, since I tried the whole "open mouth, stuff it in" route after he turned up his nose at the delicious hot dogs, and it turned out he is VERY proficient at spitting them out. Maybe him and Snuffles are related! ;)

Thanks as usual - you guys save me and my Moo Bear all the time!

My lab Barkley spits out pills all the time also...the best thing I have found for him is the strawberries....really simple to use and you can stuff multiple pills in one strawberry! Jake on the other hand just woofs it down...he is a good boy most of the time! LOL...

I had a newf that did the same thing yours did. No matter what I put the pill in he was able to eat around it and spit the pill out. I ended up just putting it down his throat and rubbing his throat gently to force him to swallow. I always followed the procedure with a treat.
