The weekend on fluids did Merrick some good and he was a lot more energetic this morning than he had been on Friday and Saturday. My husband and I agreed that if there was any chance at all of fixing this, we had to try, so we authorized the vet to do surgery. We stopped over to spend some time with Merrick first because we knew that it could be our last moments with him. I am so grateful for that time with him.
Unfortunately what she found in surgery was not good. His pancreas was very far gone with cancer. There were spots on his liver and spleen. From his xrays she had already seen problems with his lungs. Merrick's body had responded to the cancer by producing a large amount of fibrous tissue. A particularly large amount of tissue extended to his aorta, and there was no way she could break that area of tissue down. Another one wrapped around his stomach, which was responsible for the bloating he had been experiencing. She thought he probably had avoided torsion because the fibrous tissue was so tightly latched onto it. And his body could not absorb nutrients due to the damage to the pancreas. She could not predict how much longer he would have but said that he would have continued to decline. And the fact that he had just had surgery would have been even more uncomfortable for him.
We agreed that it was best for Merrick not to be awakened from the surgery. We will miss our sweet Merrick. Thank you all so much for your kind words of support. They have meant a great deal to me.
