Mange or staph maybe?

My 2 yr old female is doing a bit of scratching lately. I was assuming they were hotspots, which I treated with Gold Bond Medicated Powder( has worked for me for years).
Now she's got some scabbing over her back...and a few really thin spots. The pics I saw in the thread started by Sully( I think) look similar to mine. I was guessing mange, but I'm not sure.
Ive also noticed that her hair is getting thin over her back and she seems to be shedding pretty rapidly.

She seems to scratch somewhat regularly, but nothing crazy.

At this point, seeing a vet is financially impossible right now. ( In a dire situation, I would get her medical help).

Are there any home remedies I can try (i.e. Borax/hydrogen peroxide solution....assuming it might be mange) ?
I wish I had a pic, but I don't at the moment.

I'd also consider having her thyroid checked...
Has she been exposed to any dogs with mange?
Could she have been exposed to any contact allergen/ (like walking under pine trees?)

There are NO home remedies for mange...certainly nothing like borax or anything like that. There are several types of mange too, and without knowing which one you are dealing with, you cannot tailor treatment. I'd seriously spring for a vet visit if you possibly can.

If the rash looks like the one in the pics, it's probably staph not mange.

They will lose hair with staph if it's all over her body. And it can get much worse if she doesn't get some antibiotics. Can you figure out a way to get her to a Vet? Or are you friends with a Vet that can help you? How about your regular Vet. Will they accept payments?

There are places that can help people get medical care for their pets during times of financial hardship.

Also, many people sign up for Care Credit. It's a low interest rate credit card for only medical, dental, or Veterinary expenses. It often helps people through rough times:

Also there are some agencies that are state-specific, but I don't know what state you live in.

My vote is for a vet visit. These things can quickly get out of hand, and you will end up with a much higher bill.....so nip it in the bud. Speak with your vet about a payment plan.

My vote is for a vet visit too. My boy had something similar, and is now on antibiotics.A number of vets now offer payment plans right at their office, as they should with the prices they charge. Please call your vet's office and see if that is an option. If not, maybe a friend can recommend a local vet who can offer some professional and financial help.

I just put in a call to the Newf Rescue that I got her from. I'm hoping that they can help with the medical costs.
Here's a pic of one of the chewed areas...

If that's only ONE of the spots...she definitely needs Vet care!! Hoping you can find a way to get her there ASAP!

Please keep us posted.

Here is the ugly proof that she's been seen by a vet :)

She's now on Prednisone, and a couple topical sprays and solutions. Negative for mange.

My boy Sammy had a matching tail, and a large raw spot on the inside of one leg a few weeks ago. His diagnosis was hot spots...huge ones he created in a few hours while I was gone by licking at some itchy spots. He was also given antibiotics and sprays, and had a lovely butcher-er, shave as well. And after all these months since I got him of trying to grow his hair out. Oh well...he is a happy boy now. No more itchies, no more raw spots. :D My vet said they had no way to tell what caused him to itch in the first place...it could have been anything.

Hope it is just as quick and simple for your girl.

Poor pigeon! I'll bet she'll heal up nice and quick now that the fur is gone - fur will hold bacteria and moisture down on the skin, and provides a fabulous breeding ground for bacterial and fungal infections. As an example, imagine having to wear wet socks all the time when you've got Athlete's Foot. Itch city! Now the socks are off, and if you keep up with the sprays and pred I'll bet she'll be all healed up in no time.

Is she on a monthly flea/tick preventative? If not, she could be having an allergic reaction to flea bites.
I was also thinking fleas. I had a lab that had a terrible reaction to fleas. She was quite allergic and also had other skin issues going on. I started using a product called Nzymes. Check out www.nzymes.com. I can not say enough about the product. I had taken her to a dermotologist numerous times over the years and it just got too expensive. I started her on Nzymes Granuels and could see results in her not chewing or scratching within a couple of weeks. Her hair started growing back and she was happy. I also changed her food as was suggested on the website. We also used a flea preventative...

Good luck.

Oh my! Glad you went. She'll be feeling MUCH better as soon as that mess dries out. Hugs to the bare-bottomed girl! :)

And be prepared for a LOT more peeing while she's on the pred. So when she says she has to go, even if she only went 30 mins ago, let her or there will be a big puddle! :)

Look on the bright side... she'll be a little cooler for a few days.

:)

Sorry to hear about the prednisone! My daughter was it for about a month, it made her super cranky and gave her the munchies! Hope the Newf handles it a little better.
