Is this wierd???

I bought each of my dogs an uncooked beef marrow bone this afternoon. As soon as I got home they KNEW something was in there for them. I unwrapped each bone and handed them out to 4 very interested and excited dogs and 1 apathetic boy who politely took his bone into the living room. The other four dogs chewed and chewed for hours and with gusto; but not Zacc. Zacc laid his bone on his pillow and went to sleep. Now 4 hours later, the other dogs are finished with their bones for the day and Zacc has decided that now is the time for him to partake in this "bone blessing." :)

What in the world???? I have never seen a dog who would do this. Generally the dogs eat now and ask questions later...but not Zacc. For four straight hours he would look at it every now and then but showed no interest. Any ideas what my wierd dog is doing?

p.s. This is not the first time he has waited for his bone.

Sometimes they want them to warm up first. My guys used to take them and bury them under towels if they were too cold when I handed them out...

Buddy is very fussy - he doesn't like his food cold, or too raw, I have to sear his turkey neck, and his pork riblets, and his meat balls - not 'cook' them, but just enough 'colour'

I never even thought about the temperature thing.

And Zacc wants to know if Mila wants to go out for some fish and maybe a little somethin somethin later.

My late Annie (newf) could care less about bones. Never touched them. I couldn't figure it out. And they would sit out at room temp for several hours. Nope, no way Jose!

Sammie, OTOH, sometimes likes them, and sometimes he doesn't!

Go figure!

Piper has done that with marrow bones. She would just take it and look like she didn't know what to do with it. It was if she had to mentally process her good fortune first. I kept telling her it was OK, but she just whined, walked in circles, and then laid it between her paws.

There is always at least one at my house that must have an audience in order to eat a high value treat - used to be Sasha, now it's Dylan - he'll take any treat and curl up with it until everyone else is done with their's and then slowly savor it in front of a circle of drooling girls - they had hooves last week and I swear he made his last about 4 days - he kept hiding it and then taking it out to chew when everyone else was hungry. Come to think of it - I have a big brother who was just like that too. <g>

I have one who always takes hers outside and buries it..and then digs it up half an hour later and chews it. NO clue why...that's just how she rolls lol.

This reminds of those 'kids' that can save their Halloween candy for a month (mine was always gone within 48 hours). Some of us like to save the big moment and stretch it out, maybe that's your Zacc. I wish I could be a little more like that sometimes...
Have a good one!

Anya takes her bone no questions asked. I will have Eden's bone in my hand, holding it out to her for her to take, but she will either look at it or lick at it some. I'll put it down on the ground and she will, in her own due time, start on it. But, not four hours later! Wow!

My son would save it and then sell it at school a month later. LOL!!!

Henry gets real excited when I bring out the bones but will not chew them. He saves them. Glory and Truman love them and immediately start chewing on them until it's time for me to take them away.

My guys are on a raw diet. Most of the time, the meat they get is ground up with the organs and the bones. When Henry earned his Championship, I bought some boneless, skinless chicken breasts as a treat for him. When I proudly gave him his prize, he just looked at me like...you expect me to eat this?????? He likes his meat ground.....period.

My shepherd will do that with all treats! He sits and waits till everyone is done theirs and then he starts eating his. It kills the other dogs to watch! They make funny noises as they sit next to him watching him eat his bone!

One thought might be that Zacc's the lowest in the pack - he's not "allowed" to eat before the others finish (as it would be with wolves). Haven't you ever heard of not letting your dogs have their dinner before you have yours? I'm guessing it might be the same (innate) thing with Zacc vs. the others.

Sulley often sleeps with his...he doesn't normally give a rats behind who else has whatever else, as long as no one has sneeked his bone away. He'll share with dogs we are pet sitting or fosters without an issue, but once they leave, he gathers them and sleeps on them for a few days and he always has one that he sleeps with period. He just prefers to kiss it and caress it for a while before he gets right down to business.

This is exactly what Zacc does! Sometimes I wonder if he doesn't love to enjoy his bone as the others are lusting after it. :)

Also, he isn't the low dog on the totem pole so to speak, he is not top dog either though. I would say he is easily #2 dog out of our 5.
