I choose not to breed Landseer's any longer. I use to breed them. I stopped basically because in my opinion, there weren't enough good males available to breed to.. I don't want a "Setter" looking Landseer, IE...tall, with no bone. Long hocks and loose eyes ,and lack of pigment in the eyes. Not to mention a longer snipey muzzle.I also dislike landseer's with a blaze. But that's my personal preference.

I do have one bitch that is recessive and if I don't like the Landseer's that she produces, I will breed her black.

So if that is not what you asking - what are you asking?????
I understood your first answer... It made perfect sence. I was asking about why a breeder would choose not to breed for Landseers.... even if they easily could geneticaly. Some I spoke to could.. but would purposely not even if they had the option to.

Did I say it more plainly?

Your responded like I didn't answer your question - which I did --
Some simply do not care for landseer just as some do care for brown or grey. The prominent newfoundland color is black. If the breeder does not care of a landseer, why should they breed for it as part of their program?

Interesting thread...I am curious about a gray landseer. I know it is a disqualifying color.(doesn't matter to me) But does anyone know about the health of them? I thought I heard somewhere that they were usually the healthiest in the litter. I also heard that years ago breeders used to cull them if a litter produced one.:( Does anyone have an adult one with pics of an adult that they could share?

Don't know enough about breeding to say if gray landseers are any healthier than any other newf color. But here is Bristles picture and her health is excellent. She did tear her ACL last year by falling off the bed but aside from that there have been no health problems at all.

If people knew their pedigree's and the background of their dogs they wouldn't/shouldn't produce gray/whites and brown/whites. These are NOT Landseer's. Puppy mills and back yard breeder's like to produce these colors and advertise them as 'rare' colors.
I don't know of any health problems associated with these colors.

I am sorry you feel that way. Actually I am not a breeder and I find this thread interesting. I have a Landseer and am not offended by any statements. It is being stated quite well with thoughts and opinions I felt. I actually quite like a good debate, statements are only being made not throwing of manure.

Just to add yes one is entitled to a preference, I can look at a brown or grey and think oh that is a pretty dog. Yet ask me if I would ever own one, no I would not. Just as some do not prefer Landseers.

Just like anything else whether it be a car, house, or a certain sweater people have different preferences, it is that simple.
Another example would be you find people cranky in this thread and I do not. Neither are right or wrong just personal feelings.

Oh good grief...no one is 'cranky'...the trouble with the written word is you cannot determine the emotion...try reading it with a smile.....
Now, that said...I happen to LOVE landseers...just my opinion....The first newf I ever saw, EONS ago...was a landseer...I was at a show with an Afghan bitch, and saw this gorgeous, lumbering 'thing' across the building..I had to ask what it was....I thought it was the most gorgeous thing I had ever seen....vowed to have one one day.....just never thought I would ever be breeding them..but hey...I have a habit of getting 'Into 'things. (smile) <~~~~ note

This might sound like a stupid question but I'm going to ask anyway!!

Is there any way to predict what sort of markings will be on a Landseer? I see some beautiful correct ones, and then some that look "mishmash" (sorry can't think of a polically correct term, also can't spell lol).
Then there's the really cute one that Julie has with a black leg.
Is it all just luck or what?

Thanks you, thank you for this post ....No is being cranky that I can tell...we are all just giving our opinions of an asked question.

and I might add, I am not a fan of browns, but I can certainly appreciate a beautiful brown and ditto for a gray. I just prefer not to breed them.

The markings are always just pure chance...no way to predict at all.. When Pippi was born, I was concerned about mis mark, and had to check with some other breeders.. She is cute, but mainly I kept her because of her bone.

Of course, I have no way to prove what i'm going to say, just a hunch.
My guess would that that IF someone is saying that gray and whites were the healthiest in the litter, they are probably a BYB or miller trying to sell a gray and white! Personally, I have never found color to have anything to do with the health of the litter. Some individuals may have problems as young pups of a few days old, but it generally has nothing to do with the color.
Normally, by the time a litter is a few weeks old, health is fairly consistent unless there is an actual defect such as a heart problem etc. Most of the problems with pups seems to occur between birth and 2 weeks (knock on wood :) ) after 2 weeks, they start regulating their own body temps and health problems seem to decrease from that age on (again-knock on wood :) )

I absoluely love browns, but have never really been fond of gray.
I think part of the reason is that i have only seen a few grays, and they seemed to resemble a washed out black to me. I have never had the pleasure of seeing one at a show, so may have been that the grays I saw were not the best examples of a gray.
I love the Landseers, yet my husband doesnt care for them. I win that one though :)
