Help! Bear ate a non-used Tampon

Well, he has pooped 3 times since the "incident" (which was just about 12 hours ago)...but haven't seen anything yet.

I slept with him last night (okay, I didn't really sleep)...he slept well until about 4 am, then he became a little restless...but I'm not sure if that is normal for him (to start waking at 4am).

Fed him about 30 minutes ago, now he is back to sleeping and content.

I'll keep you posted.
I hope you see it come out soon! It's good that he's eating and comfortable.

Zuzu ate a handful of wrapped butterscotches a few weeks ago (DH uses them for throat lozenges), and it took over 48 hours for her to poop out a pile of shiny yellow wrappers. LMAO. It happened at night and I was startled by the crinkly noise. Sorry if TMI. ;) But know the, ahem, item could be making its way through just fine but not fast.

Will keep Bear in my thoughts!

Continue to monitor him closely! It is not unheard of for dogs to react to toxic shock syndrom from eating tampons. I knew a Visula who did not make it for this exact reason. If nothing comes out in a day or two, take him to your Vet for bloodwork and exam.

Good thoughts and prayers everything passes today!

Thank you for all your thoughts...

UPDATE:
We are now 17 hours out... He just pooped (again, thank doG he normally poops a lot). We used sticks to check the poop. I was expecting to see the tampon intact. But, it seems like the poop is filled with the fibers...while pushing the stick into the poop, it "feels" like a poop tampon... but yet I only see small/hair like fibers. (Sorry I'm being so detailed...just need to know).

DO you think I will see more of a solid tampon (and string)? And maybe this is just the beginning? Or do you think it will just be fibers and eventually a string?

It is excellent news that he is eating and pooping...Eating normally will help keep the intestines motile..
You may only get small amounts of fibers at a time as it passes...As others have mentioned it is a bit early to see much of it pass. You should continue to see more of it over the next couple of days. Hopefully the string will pass so that you can see he has actually passed it..........

I never even thought about TSS.

Sorry to read of the scare. Last year Snuffles ate a TON of grass. I thought he would throw it up like he normally does when he eats a bunch I think it took 5 poops to get it cleaned out. Hopefully Bear did chew it up and and it is just taking time to pass. I know I was surprised about the grass. And do not worry about being graphic. Medical issues should never be sugar coated. I know I have posted poop pictures here so people could see what I was talking about. Keeping high hopes for Bear and you to get back to normal.

so, things I've totally done in the past....put on rubber gloves and used my hands to inspect poop. It's likely that his poop is quite hard due to lack of moisture, due to tampon ingestion. I'm hoping beyond hope that he chewed it up.

Anyhow, I'd get right in there and pull it apart and see what there is to see until I found the magic string, or he clearly poops out the rest of the tampon.

This is good news!!!

Since the tampon was unused, I don't think Toxic Shock Syndrome is an issue. It's usually caused by the bacteria occurring during menstruation.
My bet is he's going to be fine; especially since you're seeing fibers in the poop. Not eating and/or vomiting often occur with obstructions, so monitor him for both. Mineral Oil can also be given to lubricate the intestines. It may be moot since, it appears to have moved through. I can't imagine that it will hurt though - maybe cause some diarrhea.

It's quite possible that it will come out just as fibers, as the stomach acid could have broken it down quite a bit. If you think about it, tampons aren't solid pieces of woven cotton, like fabric. I would expect the string to come out whole (based on previous experience with the cat...).

Great news that he's eating and pooping! Hopefully it continues to come out. It could take a few days...

Since he is pooping (with fibers), eating and drinking, not lethargic, not in pain, not stressed, is acting completely normal...

How long should I be on "obstruction" watch? I haven't left his side since it happened...and I'm more than happy to stay by him as long as it takes... I have a wedding tomorrow evening that I'm supposed to attend...

Would it be safe to leave him if he is still doing all of the same?

(Again, I don't mind staying with him as long as I have to).

Well.......Meg's Bojie took a year and a half to obstruct on a shower stopper so you could be awake and on watch for more than 360 days...!!!

If he's still acting fine, go to the wedding and enjoy yourself.

Should I have him xrayed in a few days to see where it's at? And/or will a tampon even show up on an xray?

It more than likely would not show up....If he were obstructed, food and um, other stuff backed up behind it would show as dilated loops of bowel. But since he is eating and pooping fine I would say it's not a problem at this time....

So far, so good. Doesn't seem like there has been any obstruction. He's eating, pooping, no pain, no throw up. But yet, still...only fibers in his poop. UGH, just wish the rest of it would come out so I could relax.

Thank you everyone for your comments, advice and NN love.

My sis in law lived with us for a bit when we had one little cockapoo. My Sis in law had a habit of not being so clean in the bathroom. That sweet pup ate it all, used and unused, and she was fine. We never figured out how much she was eating until my husband mowed the lawn.... My unapologetic sister in law no longer lives with us, our puppy survived with no issues, and all was well! I pray the same happens for your little family!

UPDATE:

Last evening, he finally pooped a substantial amount of the tampon out! YAY! I was so happy...I could finally start breathing again. Looks like we are on the home stretch!

Thank you again to all of you for your support! I sure needed it!
