We are bringing home Blaze in about a week. I am a total newbie when it comes to this breed so I am a little nervous but I have spent months reading this and other forums (thank you) and talking with Newf owners. I am hooked for life.

Welcome!!! I noticed from the picture that your pup is five weeks? Does that mean you're bringing it home at around six weeks of age?

8 wks. is the youngest that a pup should leave it's mom. That's also the earliest that heart checks can be done. Most responsible breeders keep their puppies unitl 10 wks. as they learn bite inhibition between 8-10 wks. Do your pup & yourself a favor & DO NOT bring it home before 8 wks. Let it get a good start in life.

maybe they just have the 5 week picture to show to everyone? It is a cute pic, and if I was introducing my pup here I'd pick a super cute photo like that! Just because the photo is a 5 week shot doesn't mean the puppy is only 5 weeks now....

anyway...welcome=-) Blaze is gorgeous!

That's an earlier picture. :) He'll be eight weeks old when he comes home, and he is a CHUNK and delicious and adorable, and is going to be Moose's best friend (that's how we met, through Moose, in Petsmart!) I'm so excited to have another local newf so close to us. Welcome, Blaze!!!!

Here's some super early pics, I hope Blaze's momma doesn't mind me sharing, but he is a LOVE.

1 week (he's the one on the left, yawning)

Two weeks

Welcome from the western suburbs of Chicago! Cute little brownie! If he's coming home at 8 weeks, I would advise you to verify with his breeder that his heart is being echo-dopplered before coming home to rule out SAS (subvalvular aortic stenosis). 8 weeks is really too early for accurate diagnosis, which is why I would recommend asking your breeder about this. For more information on what SAS is and why all reputable, responsible breeders screen pups prior to homing, please read this: http://www.northcentralnewf.org/sas.html

Somewhat related, here's an excellent thread regarding health clearances: http://www.newf.net/Forums/showthread.php?t=39038

Hi,

Please go to the Newfoundland Club America's web site and check their breeders list and their information on buying a puppy.
The kennel you are buying from has tons of red flags....if you have been lurking on NN for a while, you must have read some of the warning signs and what to look for when buying a puppy?

He really is a cutie...and I agree with Yorkville and Sun Valley. Please make sure the puppy is checked by a Board Certified Cardiologist before coming home (which they don't do until after 9 weeks because SAS won't often show up before then)! And here's the page for the NCA (Newfoundland Club of America) Puppy Information Center which has a lot of links on the left with invaluable information!

I have to agree with Lou Ann. The breeders website screams puppymill/backyard breeder. I sincerely hope that your puppy is healthy and has a long wonderful life with you, but I would STRONGLY encourage you to seriously do your research more thoroughly and check out the Newf Club of America's website and breeder information before buying another newf and supporting a breeder who's interest is not in preserving this breeds standard. Most people start out with their first newf from a less than quality source but hopefully the second, third and fourth come from legitimate breeders who show their dogs, work their dogs, do health testing and pedigree research and keep their puppies until 10 weeks old to do cardio checks on them.

I wish you the best of luck with your pup and hope that you stick around to learn more about newfs and how to find a better breeder next time!

Katie
