Head fur question

We are hoping to get our first Newf within a year. I have a (probably dumb) Newf fur question but I am curious so here it goes :) In most pictures of Newfs, they've got furry, fuzzy hair on top and around their faces, so they really look like bears. Then there are a few pics where they look more like a black lab to me- the hair on the top of their head is short or slicked back and the hair on the sides of their face looks like it lies flat and thin. Is this a difference within the breed or is this just how the owners have cut/groomed them? To me, the "bear" look is part of their charm :)

It could be a combo. We call it "floof" and Elvis grows a lot of it. We like it and keep it long, but if it gets too long he gets a nerdy middle part so we do trim the ends after awhile. Others cut it off. Some Newfs don't grow it, like the foster we have now. He's shiny smooth up top, but with the amount of fur I got off him earlier I can tell he hasn't been groomed recently.

This will sound silly, but I always stroke their head fur forward to help it stand up more. When I was showing Piper, I would spritz her floof, brush it forward and let it dry.

But I do think genetics play a part. My Hugo's fur tended to lay towards the back. He did have some long straggly floof fur that stood up, but it was so ridiculous, I used to trim it off.

Thanks for the responses! So if the dam has a smooth head, is it likely all puppies will or too is it more of a random trait that just pops up here and there?

I do this too! I never pet Nala's head backwards, always forward to make her floof stand up. I think it looks awesome and hope it stays as puffy as it is when she gets her adult coat.

Suki doesn't seem to have long floof on top, but she does have sort of flattened hair on the sides of her eyes giving her a more narrow looking head at times (or as a few people have said lately, she looks like she has a mohawk). But I've been wondering if some of that appearance is how her ears are groomed. So I bought thinning shears to see if I could groom her ears better and alleviate that long face look. I'm pretty sure she's going to get that "why did you let you 5 year old cut her hair" look!

Thanks for asking the question! I'd been wondering myself.

And then you can end up with "Muppet Curls" :alc:
Haha...I love Monty's muppet curls. Actually, since Maggie has started her thyroid meds, she has them too!

She has mostly flat, smooth fur on top of her head - not much floof. But her back is crazy curls!

My breeder told me to pet Poppy's head forward, always, to train it to floof. It seems to have worked, but she doesn't have a ton of floofy hair. I have never cut nor trimmed it, I was afraid it wouldn't grow back correctly.

We love the just bathed floof here!

His Mom (Neeka) has an awesome floof on her head so I agree there is a genetic component but suppose you could help train it to stick up. :)

Scarlett did not start up with much of a poof but she has more growing now. It just depends on the dog.
