Some of you might remember the story of Mary, our "special" puppy. Mary was the first-born of the surprise litter that our Landseer girl Abbie presented us on Thanksgiving Day, 2004, little more than a month after we brought her home. It didn't take long to notice that Mary's behavior was very different from that of her brothers and sisters, and after many exams and tests, it was determined that she was hydrocephalic. She was not expected to live long, so we didn't even try to place her in a new home, but decided to keep her with us and do our best to make her life a good one.
Well, I'm pleased to report that Mary reached her tenth birthday this week: officially Tuesday, but we always celebrate on Thanksgiving. She is lively and active, and goes to obedience practice every week to provide extra mental stimulation and give her the opportunity to socialize with new acquaintances. Ironically and very poignantly, she has outlived all her littermates, including our beloved brown Ernestine, who succumbed to laryngeal paralysis in the spring of 2013, and her mother, who left us quietly and peacefully one afternoon this August.
If you are interested in Mary's story, I've told it in more detail here:

So happy tenth birthday, beloved Mary; may you see many more.
