Halloween Costume No No?

My husband and I are going to be a German couple for Halloween.
We wanted to bring Willow into the mix (we are family after all) and a friend actually suggested "Why don't you put one of those barrels around her neck?! That would be great for pictures!"
As you and I know, St Bernards are known for those barrels, not the great Newf. And of course, that history is actually Swiss, not German. So I am wondering....Is this a good idea? The Newf actually is responsible for keeping the St Bernard going when breeding was low so they are related in some ways. BUT, I am proud of my newf and dont want to be historically inacurate (although technically those barrels are a wives tale to begin with).
Yes, I'm silly, but I thought this might be a fun topic for all of us to discuss. What do you think?!?! Would I be a Newf traitor?!
Also, I wanted to take the chance to ask if anyone was thinking of dressing up their pet for Halloween?! I was hoping to see some cute Newfs with funny hats out there!

Why not go as fishermen and doll him up with a net or fish????

Tug, as a Skunk...

I think you should make some lederhosen for her, or a dress. Top it off with the felt fedora ( complete with pins) and she can be a little German girl. Or you could cut a box to stick on her and make her a case of beer.

My Mother used to do this to us, and then parade us around. Well, not the case of beer part.

And I dress everyone up, cats included.

This is not quite true. The monks at the St Bernard Monistary bred the newf to the saint hoping to improve the saint's coat. The experiment was a failure because the heavier coat only held the snow causing the dogs to be weighed down.

There is newf in the long coated saints but there is not saint in the newfs.:eek:fftopic:

Personally I love the case of beer idea!! We're trying to think of something for the three of us to be (husband, River, and I) as well. I'm not very creative with Halloween costumes. Love Tug as the skunk!!

What about something silly like kielbasa? Hehe...this could be fun!

I. think the case of beer idea is riotous, but you could also consider something relating the carting since that is another Newf ability and they have lots of carts on farms in Germany.

All GREAT ideas guys! I like the direction you are going! You have got me some really amazing ideas here!!! The wheels are turning in my brain!
Tug as a skunk is ADORABLE! What a fantastic idea!
Jackie, I always thought little read riding hood would be hilarious for us. Your husband could be grandma (haha), you can read, and your dog, ofcourse your dog would be the big bad wolf. It actually would be hilarious since Newfies are the sweetest dogs on the planet! Just a thought.
Jeannie, I think we are both correct. From what I read the breed was experiencing a shortage so the Newfoundland was introduced for preservation of the breed and experimentation of the coat.

I like the little felt hat idea. and Yes, she can carry the beer! :)

I *was* going to sew a chinstrap onto a Red Sox cap and have Cooper wear that but after yesterday I can't bear to look at those caps...sigh. So maybe I'll get a Target dollar spot witch hat and sew a strap onto that for him.

Pfff! I say go with it. Maybe get some brown halloween hair spray and spray some small parts of him brown and add the cask, and then say he's going costumed as a Saint Bernard!

I agree with Nessa that your dog should dress up like a St. Bernard! I think it's pretty funny and I don't think the general public would pick up on the historical inaccuracy. I think it's just charming to see a big dog with a cask. We've looked at getting one for Oliver for awhile and I like the website http://www.saintbernardkeg.com/ They seem like really nice people and they have pictures of lots of kinds of dogs wearing their casks, which they custom make to fit your needs.
I also like the other ideas too and am impressed at the creativity with the home made costumes. The only costume we've tried was to make Oliver look like a skunk but it didn't turn out nearly as well as the other picture shown. I love the idea of showing Halloween photos, I hope more are shared!

How about since Newfies are Water Dogs, you could label the "Barrel" "Water"? LOL.

I would love to dress ours up for halloween, but we really don't do Halloween so I don't really have a good answer for you. I would look at maybe trying to give them a German Look with a traditional hat, etc.

I like Tug as a skunk!!! Did you just use the white halloween hairspray? Was it hard to get it out?

Yup, white hairspray. I didn't really wash him, just took him swimming a few times and it came out in about a week or two.
He made a lot of new friends in that time; all wanting to ask and pet him.
Win/Win :D
