Former Senior Newf talk thread from General

I'm currently trying to figure out how to bathe Echo. She can't stand long and I can't get her across the floor (too slick) at the dog wash. Guess we'll go out in the back yard and just do the best we can. She enjoys her baths, but it's almost impossible to get her dry at home. She's afraid of noisy dryers but loves the ones at the dog wash.
Plastic kiddie pool. Check out the hardware store for hoses close to the same size as your dryer. They usually have those spiral kinds that you can buy by the foot. You may be able to connect another piece (not too terribly long) and move the dryer farther from her for less noise. Check the shop vac section to see if they have hose connectors that would work. Otherwise, good old duct tape.

We go straight from the hose - no pool, but I will work on the dryer thing. Actually, I can get the dryer to her because we have outside "in the yard" outlets, but the noise is the problem. Will work on that, and look into my shop vac and see what I can do with it. Thank you.

Sorry, I have not read back on this thread, so maybe this was all covered. Do you have to bathe? Snuffles last bath was not quite a year ago. No one says he stinks, and he goes a lot of places like friends' homes. I find brushing (raking and slicker) does wonders. And Snuffles mostly lays down for that on his sides. Will a waterless shampoo work too that you just brush in?

She's tired

Samantha is doing very good as far as being able to get up. She's tired. I can see it in her eyes and actions. At times she won't wake up. I have to shake her to get her up. Then she gives me this look and a huge sigh. She still wants to greet customers when she knows they are here - I usually have them go to her.

She is eating well. Even though she is weak in the rear, she gets up by pushing her self up with her rear legs, she can squat to potty without falling but sometimes will stumble when walking on flat ground or her back legs just gets tangled. I don't think she is suffering. It is so hard watching her age.

Thanks for letting me vent. I know many of you understand.

MaB refuses to lay on her rugs. She doesn't like a soft bed either. My guess is it's because she was outside on her own for so many years.
She struggles with the wood floors at times. I can hear when she's trying to get up and I usually run over and lift her rear up so that she doesn't struggle quite so much.
No matter where I place a rug or mat, she prefers to go around it and lay on the floor.
Her best traction comes from the Brazilian slate floor in the kitchen because of its texture.
It's sling time! I'm looking for one now that can be a harness type and left on her.

Gracie is like that, I put down a soft blanket, she pushes it away and lies on the vinyl!! Maybe it's cool, she has never been an outdoor dog, just a pampered princess all her life lol.
Hugs to Samantha and MaB and all the other "oldies", not forgetting Ms Lu!!

Sounds like it's time for a sling for more than one. The one I use, and I think Angela uses it, too, is from Drs. Foster and Smith. It's not very expensive and it has a clip strap that holds it on. Echo's is on 24/7. It gives you two handles to lift with and we wouldn't be able to ever get her up without it. She currently is doing better. DH is wondering how long this is going to go on, since we can't take an overnight trip anywhere. With all this heat, Echo, too, is sleeping on the tile floor, which means she can't get up in the front either, but leave it to Echo she has learned to bark (more of a squeak) when she wants anything - to go out, to eat, a treat, a drink, to move to another spot, or just company. She will always give you a thank you lick, and she's always happy. At night though she seems to have more trouble getting around, can't see at all, gets anxious, stumbles sometimes, and I always wonder, but the next day she'll be her happy self. . .so far.

Oh, I forgot, but she does stink, and the show quality dry shampoo left some kind of residue that made her coat oily where I used it. She really, really needs a bath, and we're going to go ahead and try it this week, when it's not going to be 115 -only 92.

I know!! Me too! This heat and humidity is so hard on MissM. She's got more spunk in the mornings but come evening she is just too tired to want much on anything. Everyone goes out to potty for the night around 10 or 10:30 and I really have to watch her. Just the two short steps back up into the house is hard on her by the evening. I have to assist. Mark is looking at building a little ramp for her but even then the angle it would have to be (considering the retaining wall) would be a bit more steep than I think she's capable of. She does fine getting around on flat surfaces once she's up.. It's the getting up and down that breaks my heart....

We were at that stage about 3 years ago, and that's when Echo started wearing her sling. It gives you two nice handles for a lift up those stairs, etc. in the beginning. As I said, now she wears it 24/7 because she cannot walk unassisted any more.

On ramps sometimes rubber mats nailed down, or rough carpeting helps with the traction (speaking from prior experience, that is :) )

Just ordered MissM the HelpemUp
http://helpemup.com/store/
I think this is the best choice for us. I can put it on her in the morning and remove it when needed. This will give her the boost of confidence she needs. Right now she looks to me for help and I've been wrapping my arms around her belly close to her hips and lifting. She appreciates the help with a kiss so I know she's grateful. I think the harness will help in distributing the pressure from the lift a little more and it will make life better for her (and for my back too)
Awww, I love then old girl to pieces! ( oh! And it's washable too!)
Oops.. The link takes you to the smaller size but fear not!! I ordered the extra large!

dealing with the steps here too. She doesn't sleep on the tile very much except the bathroom. I need a sling. But I also need some helpful advice re incontinence at night. I bought a steam cleaner finally...but I need something more specific to prevent the incontinence if possible. Lucky is 12 and a half, has not had spay incontinence. Wonder if Proin would help with this geriatric incontinence. Any help.

We just recently put Glory on a low dose of Proin and it has helped tremendously. She's much happier and we are too. Haven't noticed any side effects from the medication.

I love the HelpemUp link! Thanks for sharing that. Sure wish we had something like that for Winston when we needed it. I think I will order one now before we need it.

Our first newf took Proin for years with no side effects. Echo, so far, is having no problems. In fact, she doesn't want to go out. That's the problem.

BTW Loew's carries an indoor/outdoor carpet runner by the yard that works beautifully on outside ramps, slippery decks, etc. In fact it works so well that ours is not 4 years old and we will continue to use it after Echo is gone. It has ridges, and we simply stapled it to the deck, and it's not expensive.

Nina, what's it made of, what happens when it gets wet or snow gets on it?
I need something for my back deck that can get icy in the winter.
We don't have Loew's here, can you post a pic?

Angela, I had an old runner in my house, that I put on the back deck when it got old. I shovel the snow off it in the winter and then I can hang it over the deck when it gets wet to dry it. It isn't the most aesthetic rug, but it gives the dogs traction on the deck when it snows or rains and that is what I want it for. I got it at Home Depot, if you have them there.
