Feeding Large Breed Puppies

I'm having a hard time finding a LBP food I feel comfortable feeding to my girl when it comes to Cal./Phos. content. I would really like to go either Orijen or Acana, but I'm hesitant because their Cal./Phos. seem rather high. Does anyone have experience with these brands? Or have others they would recommend?

Acana should be ok but dont feed puppy , feed adult food as it helps to slow their growing rate and minimises potential issues. We fed Max puppy food to start with and when he had rapid growth and joint issues we switched immediately to adult food and his growing slowed but the damage was done by then.

Its not necessarily the protein % but the quality of the proteins and single source proteins tend to be better especially with more intolerant dogs.

I think of puppy food now as McDonalds, ok for a while but not every day whereas a good quality adult food is a well balanced meal which you can supplement if required with fish or scraps but ultimately after having two pups who grew too fast on puppy food I will never go that route again and for every article that says one thing is bad another will always come along saying its good so I err on a certain amount of common sense and feeding

Cant help much more as not sure what alternatives you have in your area

We fed our Newf puppy Orijen Large Breed Puppy. I was confused between the difference between the adult and LBP and went to their customer service. The adult has more calories than the LBP. We switched to the adult when we needed to stop feeding three times a day due to doggie day care. The switch to the higher calorie adult allowed her to have the same amount of calories in two meals rather than 3.

Not all the Acana is OK. Have to check the calcium/phospherous level on the bags. I've fed some to puppy but not others until older.

Ended up switching to Nature's Variety Instinct kibble and raw. For our lifestyle and her level of growth I think that will work best. The rabbit kibble has relatively low calc./phos. levels and the raw frozen chicken patties have very low calc./phos. levels. It's approved for all life stages and went through the AAFCO feeding trials.

I follow up with her vet in about a month, hopefully this will work out for her! Previously she was on BB Wilderness LBP, and she bulked up way too much due to its high protein and fat content--we simply don't work enough for that.

Uh FYI "Giant Breed" not "Large Breed" Giant Breed dogs have different needs than Large Breeds. What did your breeder feed?

Have you considered RAW? There are pre-made formula's such as Bravo, and Oma's thsat give you the correct balance of Meat/Organ/Bone/Vegi

Actually I did decide to switch to Nature's Variety: Instinct frozen raw chicken formula. Not all their raw formulas were appropriate for Newfie puppy needs, but the Chicken and Rabbit formulas are. I'll look at Bravo and Oma, too. Thanks for the recommendation.

Thanks, I am definitely finding that to be true, as so many "Large Breed" formulas just aren't the right balance. The breeder fed Eukanuba LBP. Needless to say, Admiral switched off that immediately.

So I'm seeing fairly high Calc./Phos. levels and really high protein and fat content. The high Calc./Phos. levels could cause issues in bone growth which could be really serious, and the high protein and fat levels promote more weight gain unless your dog has a very high activity level. The high protein and fat content is less serious, just means you'll have to work a little harder to keep your puppy skinny. Let me see if I can find the article I usually reference about LBP food.
