Fee to pay Handler?

When is Scarlet showing ? We have to go there to pick up food.
The breed starts at 1pm. We are in the 9-12 mo puppy class, so we should be early in the group. Ring 2. Perhaps we will see you there. There will be a couple of Newfs who are definitely in Westminster this year according to Infodog...Of course, we are going to have fun!

A few other reasons handlers are hired.

Sometimes its purely to get it done. It can take a long time to finish a dog if you can't get to many shows, or for some crazy thing where a particular dog falls into the 'reserve king/queen' situations. A lot of being in the right place at the right time really helps.

Sometimes there aren't many shows in certain areas, or no majors nearby.

Some people can't get away from work to travel, so hiring a handler works better.

Certain dogs look/work better with a man or woman.

Going into the conformation ring has been an entirely different experience for me than doing water work, draft tests, obedience trials or Rally trials. I've even broken down and started wearing skirts and nylons. :shocker: And you know, it's kind of fun! Just another way to build on that bond between you and your dog.

A couple of things I've learned is teamwork is just as important in the showring as the other venues and no one is a loser in the ring. Regardless of who the judge picked, it still doesn't change who that wonderful dog is that you have on the end of the show lead. One can never take this personally. I always try to remember that inspite of times when I wonder why we didn't win.

I'd like to see more owner/handlers in the ring too.

Right. For whatever reason I don't look at conformation as something I have to handle my newf in. Working together in working rings is fun and I look at it different. Doesn't matter one ioda to me being in a conformation ring but I think it's because been there done that. I can get it done faster with a handler versus me doing it and my newf goes out to more shows than trying to work around my schedule. Handlers do this all the time and they can present my newf better than I can. I don't stay out there enough to do conformatin handling well.

Thanks for the replies. It sure would be interesting to come for a round trip that way to some US shows. At least looking at Westminster (thought it's probably like Crufts - no ordinary show ;)), it does look like a very different type event to the shows we have here :).

I could not agree more...after all it is just one person's opinion on that day. I'm taking my boy in again this weekend, and I'm going to just the time with him, and the fuss he gets out of the ring.
